Full Time SPED Bus Monitor (180 Days)

SUMMARY:
Under occasional supervision, provides specialized assistance to the driver and direct support to students with medical, behavioral, and complex needs while loading and unloading the school bus. Ensure students receive safe, appropriate, and attentive care throughout transport. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
High school diploma or GED preferred. Sincere interest in and desire to work with children.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be at least 18 years of age to perform each essential duty in a pleasant, professional, efficient manner. To assist the bus driver in providing the safest atmosphere possible for transporting students.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to physically manage students and equipment. Be able to observe student behavior and advise supervisor. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm, or finger motion many times. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Must be able to move rapidly through the interior of the bus and have the ability to drag 125 pounds 30 feet in less than 30 seconds, within restrictions (to simulate moving individuals rapidly in case of a bus emergency). While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100° and below 32° and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud, requiring the employee to raise his/her voice to be heard. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

SUMMARY:
Under occasional supervision, provides specialized assistance to the driver and direct support to students with medical, behavioral, and complex needs while loading and unloading the school bus. Ensure students receive safe, appropriate, and attentive care throughout transport. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides hands-on support to students with medical, behavioral, physical, and developmental disabilities during transport.
- Assists with loading, securing, and monitoring students who use wheelchairs, harnesses, safety vests, car seats, adaptive equipment, or medical devices.
- Implements and follows individualized student plans, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), in accordance with district protocols addressing medical conditions, behavioral needs, and crisis situations.
- Monitors students continuously for changes in medical status (e.g., seizure activity, respiratory distress, diabetic concerns), behavioral concerns, and immediately alerts the driver and supervisor as required.
- Utilizes de-escalation strategies and approved crisis-intervention techniques to manage challenging behaviors safely and professionally.
- Documents incidents, behaviors, medical concerns, clearly and accurately, submitting reports to the Transportation Supervisor as required.
- Maintains calm, consistent, and structured interactions that support student regulation and emotional safety.
- Communicates appropriately and professionally with students, parents, school staff, and transportation employees.
- Ensures students load and unload safely, assisting with proper student transitions between school staff and the bus.
- Attends required safety trainings, medical-response trainings, behavior trainings, and transportation in-services throughout the year.
- Performs all duties in compliance with district policies, safety standards, and state transportation regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, Assistant Director, or Director.
