The NYPA Project features ten Small Clean Power Plants (SCPP) throughout New York City, centrally managed from the control room in Astoria, NY. Powered by ten General Electric LM6000 combustion turbines operating in simple-cycle mode, the plants provide approximately 450 megawatts of reliable, efficient generation to meet the city’s energy demands. This network reflects NYPA’s commitment to efficient, environmentally responsible power generation.
Opportunity Summary
The Combustion Turbine (CT) Operator / Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of ten GE LM6000 combustion turbines located across multiple New York City sites. This multi-craft position operates and monitors generating equipment while performing mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and controls maintenance on turbines and associated balance-of-plant systems. The CT Operator / Technician also coordinates closely with the Remote Control Room Operator to support personnel safety, equipment reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Start, operate, monitor, and shut down GE LM6000 combustion turbines and auxiliary equipment in accordance with operating procedures, dispatch requirements, and environmental limitations.
- Monitor meters, gauges, alarms, controls, and operating data to evaluate temperatures, vibration, pressures, fluid levels, equipment hours, and other plant conditions, taking appropriate corrective action when abnormal conditions occur.
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of turbines, generators, pumps, fans, motors, gas compressors, water treatment systems, and associated mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment.
- Read and interpret P&IDs, electrical diagrams, operating procedures, technical manuals, and equipment documentation to safely operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair plant systems.
- When assigned to the control room, continuously monitor plant systems, respond to alarms and upset conditions, and execute startup, shutdown, and corrective actions to maintain safe and compliant operation.
- Coordinate with the Remote Control Room Operator and other personnel during normal operations, maintenance, equipment outages, emergencies, and other activities affecting personnel or equipment safety.
- Use Maximo or other applicable CMMS tools to complete work orders and maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, equipment history, and preventive/predictive maintenance documentation.
- Support maintenance and outage activities through equipment identification, troubleshooting, lockout/tagout, work requests, equipment isolations, and return-to-service activities.
- Handle hazardous materials and waste and perform assigned spill prevention and control activities in accordance with applicable environmental requirements and facility procedures.
- Maintain required operational, safety, environmental, First Aid/CPR, OSHA, and other assigned training while actively participating in NAES Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs.
- Work independently within established procedures and perform additional operating and maintenance duties as assigned to support safe and reliable operation across the SCPP facilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.
Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.
Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
The standard schedule consists of a 10 to 12-hour rotating work shift, with 4 days on followed by 3 days off. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply.
Compensation
Initial starting rate of pay is $48.82 per hour, increasing to $61.03 per hour post-probation period as per CBA guidelines.
Core Qualifications and Skills
- Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related technical field preferred. Relevant technical training, power generation, industrial, or military experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- Experience operating and maintaining combustion turbines or comparable power generation or industrial equipment, including startup, shutdown, equipment monitoring, and response to abnormal conditions.
- Strong working knowledge of combustion turbines, auxiliary equipment, and balance-of-plant systems; GE LM6000 experience is preferred.
- Hands-on experience performing mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, or controls maintenance, including troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of plant equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical diagrams, technical manuals, operating procedures, and equipment documentation to support plant operations and maintenance.
- Experience monitoring equipment conditions using meters, gauges, alarms, instrumentation, and operating data and taking appropriate action based on equipment conditions.
- Working knowledge of power plant safety and environmental requirements, including lockout/tagout, hazardous-material handling, spill prevention, and established safe work practices.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-site operating environment, with strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
