Work Schedule: The Maricopa Community Colleges Police Department operates 24 hours per day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year. Schedules may include nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules. Mandatory overtime may be required. The Police Chief reserves the discretion to re-assign Officers to different work locations / shifts as operational needs require. Assigned job duties, task, work functions may be assigned by the Police Chief.


Travel: Travel to various locations within or adjacent to the District is required to perform the essential functions of this classification.

Job Summary

Performs general duty or specialized sworn law enforcement work while fostering a culture of cooperative engagement with the community, to promote the protection of life and property, and the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes through the equitable enforcement of applicable local, state, and federal laws, as well as District policies.

The Police Chief reserves the discretion to re-assign Officers to different work locations / shifts as operational needs require. Assigned job duties, task, work functions may be assigned by the Police Chief. 

The Police Officer - Lateral will report directly to a Police Commander or designated supervisor and performs general and specialized law enforcement, such as preserving public peace, protecting lives, property, and the rights of the public. This position will also enforce state statutory laws and acknowledge compliance with federal guidelines in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education.

Additional Information

A Lateral Officer is an experienced certified Peace Officer in good standing.

  • In-State Applicants: A successful certified Arizona Peace Officer applicant will start the field training program upon being selected.
  • Out of State Applicants: A successful out of state applicant will be required to take an AZPOST waiver exam prior to becoming a certified Peace Officer in Arizona and beginning the field training program.

Upon notification, all qualified candidates that successfully pass the District Oral Board interview will then be required to submit the following additional items:

  1. AZPOST Background Questionnaire and Statement of Personal History 
    1. Submission of this form will only be accepted in an electronic format through the online state portal system managed by AZ POST
    2. Candidates will need to log into  to fill out and submit their AZ POST Background Questionnaire and statement of Personal History (PH) form 
    3. Candidates will need to create an account with OKTA, and retain the registration number generated to their submission

Please Note: Any applicant who does not possess current AZPOST certification (e.g.,out of state candidates or those with prior AZPOST certification) must submit one of the following documents by scanning and attaching the materials to the original application:

  • Proof of prior Arizona Peace Officer certification for candidates previously certified by AZPOST such as an academy graduation certificate

OR

  • Proof of equivalent training through submission of the AZPOST Record of Equivalent Training (RET) form - to locate and download the form go to  
Essential Functions
  • Routinely interacts with, and provides assistance to members of the college community, visitors and allied first responders such as fire, medical and other police personnel. Unlocks rooms and buildings; assists allied criminal justice agencies in the service of criminal and subpoenas and other court orders
  • Deters and prevents crime by patrolling buildings, facilities, properties, and other areas in the immediate vicinity of the Maricopa Community Colleges
  • Responds to complaints or requests for assistance; investigates criminal activity and takes appropriate action. May be required to arrest, detain, or subdue a resisting offender using justified and reasonable force where appropriate; may conduct searches of persons, places and things, possibly seizing and impounding property and evidence, protects crime scenes
  • Responds to calls for service including alarms, requests for medical assistance, critical incidents, traffic collisions, reports of criminal activity and other emergencies/non-emergencies
  • Observes, reports and/or remedies unsafe or problem situations and assists in identifying health and safety hazards
  • Conducts face to face interviews; observes, gathers, records, processes and preserves evidence
  • Prepares detailed written reports; presents testimony and evidence in court; mediates disputes
  • Directs traffic and/or parking activities; enforces motor vehicle operation and traffic regulations; assists motorists with vehicle problems
  • Performs crowd control and civil emergency response duties
  • Provides special services including providing personal welfare and money courier escorts
  • Provides public awareness and community education presentations
  • Trains and directs the work of non-certified Public safety Aides and other Public safety personnel
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED 

Successful graduation from an AZPOST certified training academy

Note: Applicants who possess an AZPOST certification but have not completed a probationary period with a previous agency may be considered for hire with a positive recommendation from their previous chain of command at the rank of Commander or higher.

Desired Qualifications

Law enforcement experience in a collegiate environment.

BS Degree or Higher

AZ POST Certification / one year plus

Special Working Conditions

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications: 

  1. Possession and maintenance of a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona, including the satisfaction of all qualifications (age, citizenship, background, psychological, ethical, medical, or otherwise) required for such certification, at the date of or subsequent to the date of hire. A valid certification is to indicate that the individual is authorized to engage in enforcement duties, carry a firearm, wear or display a badge, make arrests, perform patrol functions, and operate a marked police vehicle. Certifications that are restricted are not considered valid for the purpose of initial hire. 
  2. Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.
  3. Current CPR/First Aid certification is required for the duration of employment within this classification.

Background Check: Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to, polygraph testing, fingerprinting, and a psychological examination to the initial and ongoing satisfaction of MCCCD is required. 

Firearms: Positions within this classification have frequent exposure to firearms and are regularly required to carry a firearm. Incumbents must successfully complete initial and ongoing firearms qualification in compliance with AZPOST requirements. Such qualification will occur on an annual basis or on another schedule, in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, or regulations, as determined by MCCCD. Incumbents must maintain the legal ability to carry and utilize firearms in the course of their duties at all times during employment within this classification. 

Substance Abuse Testing: Due to the nature of police work, positions within this classification shall be subject to pre-employment, ongoing/random, and/or incident-based alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed below, incumbents within this classification must satisfy all qualifications, physical, medical, psychological or otherwise, required by AZPOST for certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona.


Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Positions in this classification require the ability to perform rapid and coordinated movements to ensure the safety of self and others, as well as the ability to speak clearly and convey information in person, over the phone, and via radio. Additionally, positions within this classification must possess vision sufficient to perceive depth and determine colors up close and from a distance, and hearing sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position. Positions in this classification require the ability to engage in periods of intensive physical activity and endurance.


Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.


Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in an indoor office environment; however, field work may be required which would include work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Work may include frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, fuels, odors, poor ventilation, gasses, particulates, blood or other body fluids). Work may include frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions (such as uneven ground, slippery surfaces, vehicular traffic, loud noises, disruptive or uncooperative individuals, imminent dangers or threats, sick, injured, victimized, and/or deceased individuals, persons with concealed and unconcealed weapons, and/or individuals under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs, or other substances). May respond to, work in, or be exposed to emergency conditions, or environments where limited or no information regarding dangers or hazards is known. Conditions or situations may be encountered where there is the possibility of danger to life, health, or bodily injury to self and others.

Other Requirements : Depending on the assignment and work task, the classification may be required to utilize or wear safety equipment or personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by applicable laws, rules, and regulations, or as determined by any relevant MCCCD safety policies, procedures, and/or practices, to perform essential functions of the position.
