Manager - Cyber Operations

Job Overview The Manager – Cyber Operations will lead operational activities related to the execution of the Avangrid Networks information security roadmap and oversee the day‑to‑day workload of the Avangrid Networks security/NERC operations team. The role balances real‑world risks with business drivers such as reliability, speed, agility, flexibility, and performance while ensuring infrastructure assets are maintained and supported across Avangrid Networks. Responsibilities Provide direct leadership and support to the Avangrid Networks business for NERC operations and Protection Systems. Contribute to the design, implementation, operation, and evolution of solutions and strategies for operational technologies in the context of Grid Digitalization. Manage day‑to‑day aspects of Operational Smart Grids NERC operations and Protection Systems applications. Ensure security services and solutions are operated in compliance with industry best practices and applicable privacy and legal/regulatory requirements (GDPR, SOX, CEII, NERC). Follow applicable federal agency guidance on security operations practices relevant to Grid Modernization and assess impact on the Avangrid Networks business model. Define, maintain, and measure security services and solutions for key performance, risk, and operational metrics. Develop reports, dashboards, and metrics for cyber operations and present findings to OSG Management. Enhance the NERC operations team with advanced techniques and technologies, including automation of manual efforts. Lead development and maintenance of Operations Security policies, rules, standards, and guidelines. Supervise employees managing Protection Systems applications to ensure the safety of Operational Smart Grid IT and OT systems. Implement and operate network infrastructure (firewalls, routers, switches) in compliance with documented policies and procedures. Implement and operate system security controls (system hardening, vulnerability/patch management, account management, system baselines, change control, mobile/transient device management) in accordance with documented policies and procedures. Utilize data analytics to define, manage, and lead data initiatives that blend cybersecurity data into a data lake to produce actionable insights and reports. Improve the vulnerability management workstream by coordinating internal/external relationships, communicating to impacted areas, creating and maintaining dashboards, and automating deployments. Qualifications Education: Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a technical related field with 4+ years of experience in IT/OT, NERC/CIP, and/or Cybersecurity; or Bachelor’s Degree with 6‑8 years of experience; or Associate Degree with 8+ years; or no degree with 15+ years of experience. Experience with key security processes and procedures (system hardening, patch management, vulnerability management, supplier management). Supervisory or managerial experience over staff, projects, or contractors. Minimum 2 years of Data Center and OT Infrastructure experience. Prefer 5+ years in Business Decision Support, including Cybersecurity Operations and Performance/Metrics reporting. Preferred experience with Access Controls systems (SSO, AD, TACACS, MFA, cloud‑based). Preferred experience with information and network security infrastructure and tools (IDS/IPS, firewall, WAF, configuration management). Competencies Strong understanding of applicable NERC/CIP standards. Excellent written and verbal communication skills related to cybersecurity technology. Strong system engineering and advanced networking knowledge. Understanding of the current and future state of cyberspace. Team‑focused mentality with proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. Ability to influence others to modify their opinions, plans, or behaviors. Proactive attitude, seeking improvement opportunities to positively impact security posture and business. Desired Skills and Abilities Ability to obtain a secret‑level security clearance. Knowledge of federal government cybersecurity activities and practices. Experience in federal or state regulatory environments. Experience in federal cybersecurity agencies and environments. Experience in a utility environment. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Experience with NERC‑CIP in a utility environment.
