The Administrative Office of the Courts is looking for a talented Budget Analyst who enjoys meaningful work and collaborating with leaders across Washington’s judicial branch. In this role, you will take the lead in preparing, reviewing, submitting, and monitoring biennial and supplemental operating budgets for the Washington State Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Administrative Office of the Courts, Office of Public Defense, and Office of Civil and Legal Aid. Your work will directly support the effective operation of our statewide court system. You will also shape the future of grant development within the judicial branch. This position takes responsibility for designing strategies that attract federal, state, and private grant funding, and for building strong processes that help programs secure and manage those resources. You will guide grant research, analyze complex funding opportunities, provide recommendations on multi-program initiatives, and craft statewide policies and communications that strengthen how Washington’s courts pursue and manage grants. Reporting to the Management Services Associate Director, this role blends professional-level budget development with leadership in grant management. You will work closely with AOC management, the Office of Financial Management, and legislative staff, and you’ll collaborate with executive leadership, program teams, contracts staff, grant recipients, auditors, and funding agencies. POSITION DETAILS Job: 2026-77 Status: Regular, Full-Time Location: Olympia, Washington Salary: Range 66: $82,440 - $108,228 per year (DOQ) Opens: August 19, 2026. Closes: September 2, 2026. This position requires you to be in the office at least three (3) days per week. Many of the key responsibilities for this role include: Assists executive financial leadership in developing biennial and supplemental budgets for the judicial branch. Serves as the primary technical budget advisor to key court leaders and oversee the development, coordination, and submission of all required budget documents and allotments. Analyzes complex expenditure and revenue data across multiple accounts, prepares financial reports, identifies variances, and recommends adjustments to ensure fiscal stability. Projects future revenues and funding needs, evaluates resource adequacy, and advises on potential programmatic reductions. Researches, identifies, and applies for federal, state, local, and philanthropic grants; develops statewide grant strategies, policies, and processes; and provides subject-matter expertise. Coordinates grant-related collaboration with internal divisions, executive leadership, courts, contractors, community partners, and funding entities to prioritize and secure grant investments. Ensures compliance with grant agreements and reporting requirements, provides training on fund allowability, maintains documentation, prepares for audits, and oversees grant budget monitoring. Reviews contracts and amendments for completeness and compliance, offers technical assistance to courts and contractors, and monitors funded activities to ensure performance meets expectations. Performs other duties as required. Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or closely related field to include 20 quarter hours of college credit in accounting, budget preparation and/or management analysis; AND Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible finance and/or budgeting experience working for Washington State or another government entity; OR Six (6) or more years of progressively responsible budgeting and/or management analysis experience in the private sector. A combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates a working knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the Budget Analyst may be considered. THE IDEAL APPLICANT WILL ALSO HAVE SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Effective management of time, and resources, with strong program and project management knowledge. Ability to develop clear, logical plans and strategies by integrating ideas, information, and stakeholder input. Skill in identifying critical, time-sensitive steps and setting priorities that support successful outcomes. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including report writing and presentations. Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools, including Teams, Outlook, Word, OneNote, and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build professional relationships, understand customer expectations, and collaborate across agencies. Critical thinking and decision-making skills, including risk assessment, multitasking, time management, and adaptability to change. Expert knowledge of Washington State’s budget process, accounting systems, principles, internal controls, and the ability to advise leadership on financial matters.
