About This Position Job Description: Building & Grounds Assistant Purpose: Under general supervision, perform custodial, minor maintenance, minor construction and/or grounds keeping tasks in and around City operated buildings, grounds, parks, airports and recreation areas. Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned. Clean building interiors. Mix, stir, and pour chemicals. Perform grounds maintenance. Perform minor building maintenance and repair. Operate and maintain assigned vehicles and equipment. Set-up and tear-down exhibit halls and ballrooms in compliance with applicable local codes and procedures, ensuring the specifications and needs for each event are met. Perform minor construction work such as erecting partitions, building or tearing down walls, painting, building or erecting storage shed. Perform routine administrative duties, complete forms, and prepare reports. Maintain inventory of materials and supplies, making purchases when needed. Handle and account for cash. Train new employees to perform basic job duties. Perform other duties as assigned. Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: None. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others. Skill in learning simple tasks. Skill in operating power tools. Skill in lifting and carrying equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work. Ability to understand oral and written instructions. Ability to read and write English. Knowledge of equipment used in janitorial, grounds keeping, or other related work. Ability to train others. Ability to read and follow floor plan sketches and diagrams. Minimum Qualifications: One (1) year experience related to janitorial or grounds keeping services. Licenses and Certifications Required: If assigned to operate vehicles, must possess the appropriate Texas Driver's License for those vehicles. Preferred Qualifications/Experience: Experience with general and minor building maintenance, to include routine carpentry, and experience with historic building maintenance. Experience with professional grounds maintenance equipment, to include use of leaf blowers, string-line trimmers, walk behind curb edger(s) and lawn mowers. Experience with horticulture. Preferred Skills: Experience with computers and Microsoft Word, MS Teams. Other: Ability to travel to more than one work location. Driving Requirement: This position requires a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months. Physical Requirements: Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues; and tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, stretching and reaching; and frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities. Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces. Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists. Travel: If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Salary: $22.05 to $24.26 per hour. Work Hours: Tuesday– Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm (30 Minute Lunch). May be required to work during special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs. May be required to work during City emergencies such as extreme weather events.
