Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant (Personal Needs) (26-27) Job ID: 5708106 Application Deadline: Jul 14, 2026 4:59 AM (UTC) Posted: May 12, 2026 12:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Under general supervision, the EC teacher assistant supports the assigned teacher and instructs EC students, guiding them to achieve goals of their Individual Education Program (IEP) and providing access to general education as needed. Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures. Assist children individually or in small groups to master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers. Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums. Enforce administration policies and rules governing students. Coordinate instructional efforts with classroom teachers. Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage. Collect data to document individual student progress toward IEP goals. Present subject matter under teacher guidance, using whole groups, small groups, or individual support. Assist with checking materials, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed. Assist with student attendance procedures, record keeping, and organizing classroom learning spaces. Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations. Participate in transportation duties involving arrivals and departures. Assist and supervise during emergency drills, assemblies, specials, field trips, and other school‑related functions. Provide physical assistance to students for self‑help, clothing, toileting, feeding, and miscellaneous tasks. Assist therapists and teachers with occupational and physical therapy duties and mainstreaming classes. Assist with writing assignments, taking notes, and writing responses under teacher direction. Assist by lifting, positioning, walking, and pushing wheelchairs. Participate in professional development and other meetings. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of regulations and laws for exceptional children. Knowledge and ability to use current technology and alternate communication methods for specific disabilities. Knowledge of classroom management and differentiation techniques. Knowledge of the IEP process, strategies, assessment, and research. Ability to use research‑based instruction and behavior management techniques. Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software. Ability to implement rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily operations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain relationships. Ability to employ positive communication skills. Ability to problem‑solve with sound judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school business. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment. Education and Experience At least one of the following completed: Associate’s degree, two years of higher education (48 credit hours), pass a formal assessment (WorkKeys and 96 hours of in‑service training), or completion of the NC Department of Labor Teacher Assistant Apprenticeship Program.
