The Drug Diversion Specialist Pharmacist provides leadership, oversight, and direction for the daily operations of ChristianaCare's Drug Diversion Prevention, Detection, and Response Program. This role is responsible for all aspects of the program, including diversion education, prevention, monitoring, investigation, reporting, and regulatory compliance. The Drug Diversion Specialist serves as the organization's subject matter expert and primary resource for identifying controlled substance diversion through the use of automated monitoring tools, audits, and investigations. The individual works collaboratively with Pharmacy leadership and interdisciplinary teams to ensure accountability, regulatory compliance, and the safe handling of controlled substances across the health system. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive drug diversion prevention, detection, and response program across the organization. Establish and maintain an effective drug diversion education program for caregivers, tailored to individual roles and responsibilities. Provide expertise and actively participate in multidisciplinary education and training related to drug diversion prevention and controlled substance accountability. Develop and execute a comprehensive audit and surveillance program; identify trends and elevate findings of concern to Pharmacy leadership. Utilize approved drug diversion monitoring software and collaborate with analysts to optimize reporting metrics and identify potentially concerning behaviors. Review and evaluate diversion alerts and lead investigations related to suspected drug diversion incidents. Collect, analyze, and track diversion-related data across the organization, including medication handling concerns, medication security issues, caregiver performance concerns, and patient complaints related to pain management. Maintain an accurate and comprehensive drug diversion database. Delegate auditing and surveillance functions as appropriate while maintaining oversight of program effectiveness. Ensure timely and accurate internal and external reporting related to diversion incidents in accordance with regulatory requirements. Coordinate diversion investigations with members of the Controlled Substance Accountability Team, including Caregiver Health, Caregiver Relations, Compliance, Nursing, Security, Risk Management, and other stakeholders. Develop, review, and maintain policies and procedures related to controlled substance handling, diversion prevention, detection, investigation, and reporting. Serve as a resource to leaders and staff regarding controlled substance accountability and diversion prevention best practices. Prepare and present diversion monitoring reports, trends, and findings to organizational committees and leadership teams, as appropriate. Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable federal, state, and accreditation standards governing controlled substances, including regulations established by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), State Boards of Pharmacy, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and The Joint Commission. Support compliance with medication management and controlled substance security standards across the health system. Develop and implement quality assurance initiatives that promote continuous compliance and enable early identification of process deviations. Collaborate with Pharmacy Operations Leadership, Pharmacy Supply Chain Leadership, and regulatory agencies, including the Delaware and Maryland Boards of Pharmacy, regarding controlled substance management and diversion prevention activities. Maintain extensive knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and accreditation standards and provide regulatory interpretation when needed. Serve as a member of the Controlled Substances Accountability Subcommittee of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Perform other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency required or equivalent experience, defined as a minimum of three (3) years of acute care pharmacy experience ASHP-accredited PGY2 Pharmacy Residency required or equivalent experience, defined as a minimum of three (3) years of relevant acute care pharmacy experience in drug diversion, in addition to PGY1 residency or equivalent experience Board Certification preferred Relevant drug diversion certification required within twenty-four (24) months of hire (e.g., ASHP Drug Diversion Certificate) Current pharmacist licensure in the State of Delaware, or eligibility for reciprocity ChristianaCare Offers: Full Medical, Dental, Vision and other insurance benefits 403 (b) with an employer match Generous Paid Time Off Incredible Work/Life benefits including 12 weeks of paid parental leave, annual membership to care.com, access to backup care services for dependents through View email address on click.appcast.io, retirement planning services, financial coaching, fitness and wellness reimbursement, and phenomenal discounts through several vendors for hotels, rental cars, theme parks, shows, sporting events, movie tickets and much more! Hourly Pay Range: $65.25 - $104.41This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
