We are seeking a passionate and committed teacher to join our qualified team of educators. As a teacher, you will be responsible for cultivating the students' interest in education and development. Your responsibilities will include teaching the appropriate course of study following the state standards for the subject matter by using various instructional strategies that meet individual learning styles. As a teacher of Garfield Heights City Schools, you should have a passion and love for teaching students in an urban community. Our ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of teaching best practices and vital innovation and interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions:

• Ensure safety of students
• Teach and evaluate students using sound instructional practices
• Effectively manage the classroom with clear expectations for student behavior to maintain a safe learning environment
• Utilize positive behavior support systems for students
• Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
• Maintain accurate data on student interventions and complete educational documentation and complete records as required
• Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learners
• Provide guidance to students which will promote their welfare and their proper educational development
• Attend parent/teacher conferences, meetings and inservices
• Distribute course related assignments
• Ensure students are learning all subject material by utilizing summative and formative assessments and evaluating student projects on a regular basis
• Make provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes before and after the instructional day
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, progress book, and conferences
• Notify parents if student is not meeting classroom goals
• Instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
• Provide opportunities for virtual field trips and/or out of school field trips
• Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct
• Work on interventions for students and when needed, refer students suspected of learning difficulties to the intervention assistance team
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
• Follow/support/carry out the district and building mission statement
• Act as teacher, facilitator and information source in subject area specialty
• Teach new concepts and facilitate different activities enabling students to learn in different ways
• Collaborate with colleagues and department leaders
• Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
• Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., home and discipline situations, medical background and family history
• Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
• Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
• Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined in state standards
• Observe ethics of the teaching profession

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current on relevant issues
• Support school, enforce school rules and policies
• Participate on building level teams and/or teacher based teams and/or district level "teams"
• Organize various subject specific programs within assigned building, e.g., Art show
• Work closely with administrators as part of development teams to discuss and implement new practices such as "team" teaching, semester projects, etc.
• Act as department chairperson when requested and agreed upon
• Serve as a role model for students
• Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materials
• Serve on committees and cocurricular activities as agreed upon
• Supervise student teachers
• Discipline students when necessary following the district PBS model
• Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant or designee

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from a four-year college or university
• Less than one year related experience
• Appropriate State of Ohio certification/license

Additional Working Conditions:

• Occasional evening/weekend/summer work
• Occasionally lift, carry, push and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds, e.g., classroom materials and supplies
• Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, crouch, kneel, balance and stoop
• Possible requirement to travel
• Occasional exposure to high heat index temperatures and low wind chill temperatures

Middle School students have increasingly greater opportunities to prepare themselves for high school and parents are readily encouraged to be involved. Elementary School students in the GHCS also participate in such valuable literacy programs as LETRs and social/emotional initiatives as the Zones of Regulation. The GHCS places a great deal of emphasis at all levels of education on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) and each school has won awards from the State of Ohio for encouraging and promoting positive behavior. A wide variety of co-curricular offerings are available to students of all ages in the Garfield Heights City Schools as well. Such opportunities include more than 18 varsity sports, the district's show choir, Music Express, Marching Band, Theater, A Capella Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Glass Ceiling, Future Engineers, and more.
