Bus Aide

Position Summary

Landmark Academy is seeking a dependable Bus Aide for a temporary assignment to provide adult support to one student with a 504 plan during morning and afternoon bus transportation. The Bus Aide rides the assigned route, monitors and assists the student, and works with the bus driver to maintain a safe, calm, and supportive environment from pick-up through drop-off.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one adult supervision and support to the assigned student during the morning and afternoon routes.
• Implement the accommodations and supports outlined in the student's 504 plan as they apply to transportation.
• Assist the student with safe boarding and exiting of the bus, including securing seat belts or harnesses as needed.
• Monitor student behavior and respond calmly and appropriately, using approved de-escalation and redirection strategies.
• Support the bus driver in maintaining order and safety on the bus so the driver can focus on operating the vehicle.
• Ensure the student is released only to an authorized parent, guardian, or designated adult.
• Communicate promptly with the transportation supervisor, building administrator, and designated school staff regarding incidents, concerns, or changes in the student's needs.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA and district policy.
• Assist with cleaning or securing the assigned seating area as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (or must be at least 18 years of age).
• Successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprinting as required by Michigan law and Academy policy.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to maintain confidentiality.
• Patience, dependability, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
• Reliable transportation and consistent, punctual attendance for both daily routes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working with children, particularly students with disabilities or special needs.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Familiarity with 504 plans, IEPs, or special education services in a school setting.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to step on and off a school bus repeatedly throughout the route.
• Ability to assist a student with boarding, seating, and securing restraints, which may include bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to remain seated on a moving vehicle and to respond quickly in an emergency, including assisting with evacuation.
• Ability to tolerate varied weather conditions during loading and unloading.

Work Schedule Detail

The assignment consists of two split shifts each school day: approximately 7 :00 a.m. - 8 :30 a.m. and 3 :00 p.m. - 4 :30 p.m. The position follows the Academy's student attendance calendar and does not include work on days when school is not in session. Route times are subject to change based on transportation needs.
