Primary Objective of Position
Nature of Work:
This position is responsible during a specified period of time, for the maintenance of order, enforcement of laws, and protection of life and property. This position also assists in the investigation of criminal offenses, accidents, and other police-related problems.
Communicates with:
Internally – All staff, City Council
Externally – General public, County staff

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Work Functions:
Performs community patrol: Operates a patrol vehicle; observes and enforces violations of parking and traffic laws and city code violations; responds to reports of suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; responds to radio dispatches; conducts security checks on businesses, schools and other buildings; and answers calls, questions and complaints.
Enforces criminal and traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations; assists motorists in distress.
Arrests offenders, utilizing reasonable force if necessary; and transports suspects to the jail.
Provides first response medical treatment at injury scenes.
Investigates crime and accident scenes: gathers, processes and stores evidence; interviews suspects; takes victim and witness statements.
Provides testimony in court.
Serves as mental health first responder, mediator, and ensures continuity of care through the mental health system.
Ensures vehicle and equipment are in proper working order.
Assists in and attends ongoing training in procedures, tactics, weapons, computer systems, and related subjects.
Coordinates with other shifts and law enforcement agencies.
Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.

Ensures established programs for law enforcement and public service are achieved and implemented.

Minimum Qualifications / Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience:
Two (2) year community college degree or vocational school training in police sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or related field.
Completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications of Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or related field.
One (1) year experience in law enforcement, either as a sworn, non-sworn, or volunteer position.
Fluent in a second language.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Valid MN Driver’s license.
Peace Officers Standards and Training License or Basic Law Enforcement Training certification.
Must meet all state-mandated and employer-required certifications, medical, psychological, and other requirements.
Knowledge of:
Law enforcement weapons and equipment.
Safety principles and practices.
Defensive techniques.
Physical apprehension, handcuffing, and restraining techniques.
Geography of the City.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Orientation towards community policing programs and principles.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
Ability to adapt to changes in tasks and responsibilities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Entry Level Hiring Bonus – New Police Officer
The City will pay an Entry Level hiring bonus of $3,000 to new Police Officers.
Upon successful completion of Field Training (FTO), the Entry Level Police Officer will receive $1,500 (less taxes).
Upon successful completion of probation (one-year of employment), the Entry Level Police officer will receive the remaining $1,500 (less taxes).
All hiring bonus amounts must be re-paid in full to the City in the event the new Officer’s employment ends, voluntarily or involuntarily, within two (2) years of the date of hire.
Lateral Level Hiring Bonus – Experienced Police Officer
The City will pay a Lateral Level hiring bonus of $6,000 to experienced Police Officers.
Upon successful completion of Field Training (FTO), the Lateral Level Police Officer will receive $3,000 (less taxes).
Upon successful completion of probation (one-year of employment), the Lateral Level Police officer will receive the remaining $3,000 (less taxes).
All hiring bonus amounts must be re-paid in full to the City in the event the Lateral Officer’s employment ends, voluntarily or involuntarily, within two (2) years of the date of hire.

Four (4) hours of overtime minimum for any court appearances while off duty
$950 paid annually (2026) to the Officer for uniform upkeep
All uniforms and equipment are provided by the department
Officers in special assignments qualify for additional pay

Overtime shifts are available monthly in the form of grant funded DWI/traffic enforcement
To aid with investigations and traffic enforcement, automated license plate readers (ALPRs) have been installed within the City on main thoroughfares

2026 Full Time Benefits
