Director-Respiratory Care Services-Full Time-Day-Mount Sinai Queens

Overview

Responsible for serving as administrative head and technical director of the Respiratory Care Department and Cardiopulmonary Laboratory with responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, integrating and directing the administrative and operational activities associated with providing respiratory care, blood gas, and diagnostic pulmonary function testing services at the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Provides administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation and administration of current and long range policies, procedures and programs.
• Oversees the daily operation of the department, including creating and implementing production schedules, tracking and reporting systems, managing work assignments, and identifying and resolving issues.
• Establishes goals and objectives for the department that are consistent with MSHS policies and federal, state and local regulations. This may include defining the scope of specific departmental projects and analyzing requirements to execute those projects successfully.
• Defines and documents procedures, identifies process and workflow changes for continuous improvement and implements best practices for greater efficiency. Provides process improvement assistance when needed and evaluates and develops logical workflows where applicable.
• Collaborates with Respiratory senior leadership and/or Chairman to develop short-term and long-range plans. Serves as primary point-of-contact for interdepartmental communications to maintain standards, implement improvements, define and measure progress, and meet business objectives.
• Provides coordination for and general supervision of subordinate respiratory care / pulmonary function testing laboratory management staff. Develops and implements goals, standards, and performance guidelines for clinical and laboratory staff and supervisors. Provides guidance and leadership training to staff as necessary and appropriate. Oversees discipline administration for department personnel to ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
• Ensures an adequate supply of equipment necessary to provide respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services. Maintains current knowledge of equipment, develops and maintains inventory, and evaluates condition and replacements as needed. Ensures non-disposable equipment is tested, serviced, cleaned/sterilized and maintained per manufacturer recommendations and clinical standards.
• Develops position descriptions and ongoing competency assessments for all staff; ensures staff competency is evaluated regularly. Develops and implements staff training and upgrading programs. Develops and implements goals, standards, and performance guidelines for clinical and laboratory supervisors.
• Ensures respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services are provided by an adequate number of trained and licensed personnel. Evaluates staffing needs and coordinates recruitment with Human Resources. Develops and implements staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage. Periodically reviews staff compliance with licensure requirements and monitors any actions affecting licensure.
• Develops respiratory care components of interdisciplinary policies and procedures to integrate into patient care. Maintains current knowledge of equipment and maintains inventory. Periodically evaluates equipment and makes recommendations for replacement or upgrading. Ensures non-disposable equipment is tested, serviced, cleaned/sterilized and maintained according to manufacturers recommendations and clinical standards.
• Ensures coordination of respiratory care / pulmonary function testing services with other clinical and non-clinical departments. Maintains communication with leadership of Nursing, Hospital Administration, medical staff, and ancillary departments to integrate respiratory care into patient care. Responds promptly to questions or inquiries and participates in interdisciplinary meetings as needed.
• Develops, updates, and ensures implementation of policies and procedures for safe and effective delivery of clinical and diagnostic respiratory care and pulmonary function testing services, including emergency airway care, resuscitation, airway management protocols, disaster responses, ventilation protocols, aerosol therapy, laboratory testing, and related safety practices.
• Ensures department policies and procedures comply with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., JCAHO, OSHA, NYS). Maintains current licensure status for staff and designs and implements the quality assurance program for the department. Responds to inquiries from regulatory authorities and complies with budgetary, cost, expenditure, and reporting requirements.
• Maintains awareness of current professional requirements related to respiratory care and develops an overall plan for service delivery at the hospital/medical center.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred). Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
• Experience: 8 years full-time experience in respiratory care including direct clinical experience in hospital-based, acute respiratory care. Leadership/management experience required.
• License & Certification: NYS Respiratory Therapist License; BLS; ACLS
