Police Officer (Lateral)

POLICE OFFICER (LATERAL) Lateral Entry: Possession of a valid POST Basic certificate and previous or current sworn peace officer employment with a California law enforcement agency. Please refer to the qualification guidelines below for additional details. Responsibilities Police officers protect life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and by providing non‑criminal services. Patrol an assigned beat to identify circumstances that indicate a threat to life or property and take action to mitigate such threats. Officers may also be called upon to assist in community policing, traffic/motorcycle enforcement, forensics, SWAT operations, helicopter support, canine programs, and other duties as assigned by the department. Qualifications Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma or recognized equivalent and completion of a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Training Academy. Experience: Employment as a sworn peace officer within the previous twelve months at the time of application; OR previous employment as a sworn peace officer with a California law enforcement agency and possession of a currently valid POST Basic Certificate. Background Investigation: Successful completion of a Peace Officer Background Investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department, including satisfaction of polygraph, medical, and psychological examinations. Other: Valid California Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; adequate physical and vision standards; legal authorization to work in the United States under federal law. Desirable Some college coursework in criminal justice or a related field. Knowledge of modern police practices, current laws and ordinances, and the geography of the City of Ontario. Benefits – Special Pay Opportunities Bilingual Pay: 6% of base pay Educational Incentive Pay: up to 7.5% of base pay Shift Differential Pay: up to 3% of base pay Motorcycle Pay: 5% of base pay Air Support / Helicopter Pay: 5% of base pay Airport Operations Pay: 5.12% of base pay Canine Pay: 5% of base pay Pilot Pay: 8% of base pay FTO Pay: 5% of base pay Background Investigation Suspect’s relatives, references, and acquaintances are evaluated for suitability. Educational history, residence history, and work history are verified. Military service records are checked. Personal financial management is considered, though debt does not automatically disqualify. Criminal, driving, and insurance records are reviewed; felony convictions are grounds for disqualification.
