Public Works Laborer

SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs work in the maintenance, repair and operation of the city's water supply system, drainage and wastewater system, streets, and parks. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Operate and maintain water, wastewater and drainage systems while under supervision. Perform preventative and emergency maintenance on various water and wastewater system components while under supervision. Operate a wide variety of hand tools and mechanical equipment. Perform minor field repairs on city equipment. Operate small and medium size trucks, backhoes, water and sewer treatment equipment, pumps, mowers, etc. Other duties assigned by Public Works Director, Public Works Lead, and City Administrator. SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES (Required) None KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Basic level of knowledge concerning hand tools, power tools and mechanical devices. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written procedures and instructions. Ability to maintain good public relations and ability to work well with others. Ability to carry out all duties in a safe manner. Physical ability to perform tasks requiring modest to heavy physical effort, sometimes in strained positions. Earn class "D" water AND wastewater certifications within the first 6 months of employment Earn class “C” water AND wastewater certifications as allowed by TCEQ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or equivalency Some experience with hand and power tools Basic mechanical knowledge Valid Class C Driver’s License PREFERENCES None WORKING CONDITIONS Works mostly outdoors in extremes of heat and cold. Subject to afterhours call outs. Shall work overtime when required. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Must pass pre-employment drug test. Must pass criminal history check.
