It's more than a career, it's a calling Job Summary The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient's hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient/customer driven approach. Responsibilities Performs comprehensive nursing assessment/reassessment. Age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessment, including input from family/guardian when appropriate. Accurate documentation of findings. Assessment of post‑op/post‑invasive procedure patients. Documentation of education and discharge needs of patient and family on admission and throughout hospitalization. Patient reassessment documenting observations per plan of care, changes in condition, response to care, procedures, etc. Establishes, coordinates and evaluates a plan of care based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols and standards of care. Identifies short‑ and long‑term goals based on patient care needs. Forms nursing interventions to achieve desired patient outcomes. Incorporates disease‑specific evidence‑based practice into the care plan and documentation. Provides and documents nursing interventions based on assessed patient needs, plan of care, and changes in patient status. Collaborates with team members for daily plan of care for assigned patients. Coordinates and communicates patient care, including accurate handoff communication reports. Administers and documents medications accurately per policies and procedures. Monitors, maintains and documents IV fluids and parenteral nutrition per policies and procedures. Completes referrals as indicated by assessment data. Requests consultation for special needs, equipment, or information for patient and/or family. Provides patient/family education and discharge planning per guidelines and protocol. Clarifies all physician orders as warranted and implements them accurately and timely. Assists physicians with procedures/treatments or delegates to Care Partner as appropriate. Documents readback for all telephone or verbal orders except emergencies. Recognizes changes in patient condition and takes appropriate nursing actions. Involves family/guardian in care and decision‑making as appropriate. Recognizes patient risks and takes appropriate action. Puts Infection Control practices into daily care. Documents and/or communicates nursing care or changes in patient condition. Performs and documents ongoing evaluation of care effectiveness from assessment data, interventions, medication response, treatments, and procedures. Evaluates and documents effectiveness of patient/family education. Modifies plan of care as indicated. Reports significant changes in clinical parameters immediately to physicians and others as needed. Identifies problems, gathers pertinent data, suggests solutions, communicates through appropriate lines of authority, and works toward resolution. Reports variations from care/treatment per policy and procedures. Provides specialized care to patients at high risk for injury. Restraint Care: initiates/evaluates alternatives to restraint, applies restraints per approved procedure, monitors response, provides specified care, consults peers, documents use thoroughly. Pain Management: assesses pain, incorporates cultural/spiritual beliefs, implements pain management techniques, includes patient/family in plan, considers alternative methods. Abuse Assessment: recognizes abuse criteria, reports signs to appropriate authorities, takes action to support patient safety. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice. Adheres to all quality and performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. Participates in learning experiences that increase professional competence. Maintains currency in hospital/unit information, communication, policies and procedures. Responds positively to change and provides assistance and support to peers. Orients and precepts new employees, participates in collaborative team approach, serves as resource person, delegates appropriately, redirects clinical staff, communicates care plans clearly, oversees supervision and teaching of students/new staff nurses. Performs job in accordance with safety and infection control policies. Uses standard precautions and disposes of hazardous waste per guidelines. Maintains safe, clean, comfortable, therapeutic environment. Follows hand hygiene procedures and uses safe patient handling techniques. Reports risk management concerns using eSRM and completes all annual mandatory requirements (license and certifications, BLS, HI, TB screening, influenza vaccination, ethics training, safety training, information security, abuse & neglect course, blood‑borne pathogens training, competency trainings). Provides service excellence to hospital customers by delivering timely, high‑quality care in a courteous and respectful manner. Demonstrates care and courtesy, meets physical, spiritual, psychological and emotional needs of patients and families. Works with team to answer call lights promptly and resolve mix‑ups. Communicates effectively, maintains confidentiality, listens to concerns, explains procedures, allows time for questions. Provides accurate handoff reports and shares knowledge to facilitate workflow. Uses resources wisely, recommends practice changes to increase efficiency and minimize waste. Ensures customer satisfaction using AIDET and hospital commitments. Incorporates performance improvement and evidence‑based practice into individual professional practice. Assists in developing and implementing nursing unit goals and remains current with evidence‑based initiatives. Identifies improvement opportunities, participates in data collection, suggests solutions, communicates via appropriate lines of authority, and works toward resolution. Participates in performance improvement processes, leads improvement teams when requested, contributes to data collection, participates in evaluation of results. Participates in nursing research, departmental and hospital improvement activities, occurrence reviews, and maintains/improves all nursing quality indicators. Provides age‑appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients as assigned. Demonstrates knowledge and skills of normal growth and development required for the patient age group. Assesses and interprets age‑specific data to identify patient needs. Utilizes appropriate communication skills for age‑specific responses. Involves family or significant other in decision‑making. Provides necessary services for the age groups routinely served. Provides cost‑effective services. Utilizes resources efficiently and documents chargeable supplies and equipment. Prioritizes responsibilities and completes work on time. Uses non‑clinical time constructively, e.g., chart audits, mandatory education, etc. Job Specifications Minimum Education: Licensed to work as an RN in the state of Missouri. Working Conditions: May be exposed to blood‑borne diseases, unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), varying and unpredictable situations, emergency and crisis situations, and irregular hours. Physical Requirements: Occasional prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifts, pushes, transfers; occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Licensing Requirements Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA) Registered Nurse (RN) – state license (Missouri Division of Professional Registration) or equivalent.
