Sterile Processing Supervisor
Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, the Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for overseeing all Sterile Processing Department (SPD) operations, ensuring the safe and efficient reprocessing of patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation. Responsibilities include the collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment.

This role manages surgical instrument inventory and departmental supplies, serves as the subject matter expert for product reprocessing, and ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and professional standards, including AAMI, AORN, APIC, and CMS guidelines. The Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for departmental budgeting, staff leadership, equipment oversight, and collaborating with clinical departments to ensure timely instrument availability while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Standards & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure departmental policies and procedures comply with all applicable regulatory and professional standards, including CMS, AAMI, AORN, and APIC.
  • Review, revise, and update departmental policies annually as needed.
  • Maintain all documentation and records required for regulatory compliance, including Instructions for Use (IFUs) for surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Maintenance to establish and maintain preventive maintenance programs for Sterile Processing equipment.
  • Ensure all sterilizers, instrument washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and related equipment are maintained according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Anticipate and respond proactively to equipment issues.
  • Schedule staff and workflow to ensure surgical cases have the necessary instruments and equipment available.
  • Monitor labor utilization and departmental expenses while maintaining performance and attendance records.
Financial Stewardship & Quality Improvement
  • Demonstrate proficiency with instrument tracking systems, case cart management, patient charging, materials management, and departmental budgeting.
  • Collaborate with Surgical Services leadership and Finance to develop departmental budgets and capital equipment plans.
  • Maintain fiscally responsible practices while meeting departmental budget goals.
  • Follow established industry best practices and infection prevention standards.
  • Serve as a liaison between Sterile Processing and other departments regarding processing, sterilization, and linen handling procedures.
  • Lead quality improvement and Lean initiatives to improve departmental workflow, efficiency, and patient safety.
  • Participate in organizational quality improvement initiatives.
Team Leadership & Staff Development
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard Sterile Processing personnel.
  • Provide coaching, ongoing feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive orientation programs for new employees.
  • Coordinate staff training, competency validation, and continuing education.
  • Ensure work is performed according to technical, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate education related to new products, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ensure staff complete all required mandatory and technical education.
Sterile Processing Operations
  • Provide hands-on leadership while supervising daily Sterile Processing operations.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Organize and direct daily departmental activities to provide exceptional service while minimizing infection risk.
  • Oversee all aspects of:
    • Decontamination
    • Instrument assembly
    • High-level disinfection
    • Sterilization
    • Prep and pack
    • Distribution
    • Sterile storage
    • Inventory management
    • Sterilization documentation
  • Ensure readiness for scheduled and emergent surgical procedures.
  • Monitor Sterile Processing quality assurance and quality control activities.
  • Track equipment performance and recommend upgrades or replacements to meet manufacturer IFU requirements.
Organizational Expectations
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, service excellence, and effective communication.
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
  • Follow all workplace safety policies and procedures.

  • Participate in organizational Service Excellence initiatives and required training.
  • Attend at least 50% of departmental staff meetings and review all meeting minutes.
  • Complete all required annual education by assigned deadlines.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and perform repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard business software.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years of Sterile Processing supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Sterile Processing experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Project Management

  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPDT) certification.
  • Endoscopy Certification.
  • Instrument Specialist Certification.
  • CHL Leadership Certification.
