COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Gordon County Sheriff

Public Safety Communicator

Responsible for dispatching and documentation of emergency communications in association with Calhoun-Gordon County Public Safety Agencies.

Answers all emergency lines, telephone and radio, and dispatches appropriate agency.

Gathers pertinent information from a caller and offers support until a responding unit arrives on scene.

Gives necessary medical instruction to caller following Emergency Medical Dispatch Training.

Reads and interprets map of Gordon County and gives directions to all responding units to an incident.

Tracks and documents the status, times, and mileage of medical, fire, and public safety units responding.

Provides additional information to all responding units to assist and protect them.

Answers administrative lines coming into 911 Center takes messages for Center Director.

Attendance is required to ensure that the Center is operational and efficient.

Daily housekeeping within the communications center to ensure that work areas are do not present a safety hazard to employees.

Knowledge of, or willing to familiarize self with, all areas of Gordon County including designated zones and which responding units cover each.

Knowledge and ability to use all general office machines including but not limited to: fax machine, word processor, tape recorder and dictaphone.

Ability to work effectively as a team member in providing excellence in customer service to the citizens of Gordon County.

Ability to use judgment and remain calm in crisis situation.

Ability to read and interpret maps.

Computer literate with good working knowledge of various spreadsheet and word processing software.

Ability to copy information as it is being received, simultaneously digest what is heard, and respond immediately.

Ability to perform multiple tasks at once: monitor multiple radio frequencies, answer telephone lines, answer radio traffic, and document all details.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.

Ability to do math calculations on a high school level.

Ability to operate a sending-receiving radio console.

Ability to take crisis calls and low stress calls back to back unemotionally.

Ability to learn and apply public safety regulations and procedures and ability to become familiar with public safety personnel and their radio call numbers.

High School Diploma or Equivalency.

EMD Certified or ability to become certified.

Completion of or ability to complete 40-hour Basic Communications Dispatch Course.

Know or learn 10-codes and other public safety codes used within agencies.

Learn to use office machine including but not limited to computer, fax machine, word processor, tape recorder, Dictaphone, and TDD.

Obtain at least 283 hours of training and continue training on an ongoing basis to meet daily, monthly and yearly requirements.

Obtain CPR Certification.

Attend optional related courses as deemed necessary by the E-911 Director or the Assistant Director.

The physical demands of this position are such that require the employee to sit for long periods of time, i.e. shifts of twelve (12) hours, in often times high stress situations.

When relocating in a crisis situation, the employee may be exposed to adverse weather and environmental conditions.

The employee is required to possess good hearing in both ears and be able to distinguish between tones.

Work schedules may require employee to work both day and evening shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and last minute schedules.

The employee is required to perform bending, twisting, and reaching motions.

The employee may have to lift weighs of up to 20 to 25 pounds, (office supplies, computer paper, etc.)

The work performed for this position will be in an office or radio communications room setting. Occasional fieldwork may be required in the mobile command center, which is similar to that of the communication room.

Work performed in a secure room with no windows, and sitting at a consol that restricts movement to a six (6) foot radius.

There is close supervision with routine questioning about a course of action taken.

Communication Officers are required to wear a uniform or dress appropriately as a team showing uniformity.
