Our Community RootsThe Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival.Each group’s name means “The People” in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.The PositionAs Planning and Community Development Director, you will lead land use and community development efforts that support orderly growth and protect community priorities. This senior role ensures planning decisions are clear, compliant, and responsive to stakeholder needs.Key responsibilities include directing long-range and current planning; overseeing zoning, land use, and development review; coordinating with internal departments, tribal leadership, and external agencies; guiding policy and code updates; managing budgets, contracts, and staff performance; and presenting recommendations in public and leadership settings.Required qualifications/skills:- Senior-level experience in planning/community development, including supervisory leadership- Strong knowledge of zoning, land use law, permitting, and regulatory processes- Proven ability to communicate effectively, negotiate, and build consensus- Strong judgment, integrity, and a safety-minded approachIf you’re ready to help shape thoughtful development in Reno, apply today.How Your Days FlowYour weekday starts with a quick scan of active projects and time-sensitive items before connecting with your team to align on priorities. You’ll balance big-picture planning with practical details, keeping communication steady and expectations clear.
