Automotive Mechanic

Order#: NY1721047 Automotive Mechanic Starting Pay: $29.17 - $36.87/hour plus OT and shift pay This is a skilled mechanic position responsible for completing repairs to diesel trucks and equipment. Employees are initially restricted to minor overhauls not involving complete disassembly and assembly of the unit, with immediate exposure as an assistant to basic diesel engine concepts, vacuum and air brake concepts, and major hydraulic repair concepts. Employees may work under unpleasant working conditions, including extremes of heat, cold, fumes and odors, wet, damp and cramped working areas. Work is performed independently or with a repair team under limited supervision. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Senior Automotive Mechanic or other higher-level staff member for non-routine, difficult, or costly repair work. Lead supervision may be exercised over Laborers or other staff assigned to assist with workload. Does related work as required Typical Duties: (and others as assigned) o Performs standard heavy equipment and automotive repairs to diesel and/or gasoline engines and hydraulic systems; o Repairs and/or rebuilds subassemblies for all automotive systems, such as cooling, electrical, exhaust, steering and suspension, fuel systems, brakes and drive train; o Performs preventive maintenance functions including lubrication, fluid checks, major and minor tune-ups and safety inspections of trucks, automobiles, and other heavy equipment; o Operates snow removal and road construction equipment. o Repairs mechanical parts on sweepers, loaders, salt spreaders, backhoes, and other public works equipment; o Diagnoses automotive problems and determines correct parts needed; Preferred Qualifications: Three (3) years experience as a diesel mechanic Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER (A) Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Technology, Apprentice Training-Automotive, Automotive and Diesel Technology, Automotive/Diesel and Industrial Technology, or a closely related field; OR, (B) Six (6) months paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as an automotive mechanic; OR, (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B), above. Special Requirements: o Possession of a valid New York State Class B commercial driver license at the time of appointment. o Background Checking: Applicants will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation, physical, driver license check and drug testing. o Must be at least 18 years of age o Must have a clean drivers license o Requires ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions.
