San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is hiring Police Officer II positions to serve diverse communities with a commitment to community‑oriented policing. Responsibilities Provide a visible police presence to deter crime and support citizens. Build strong relationships with community members and uphold best practices of Community Oriented Policing. Serve as a police presence at major public events to ensure public safety. Identify potential criminal activity or hazardous situations and take appropriate action to protect citizens and property. Secure crime scenes and process evidence. Respond to calls for service, observe violations, make arrests, and issue citations when necessary. Conduct criminal investigations by gathering evidence and interviewing victims and witnesses. Document observations and actions through radio communication and completion of reports. Testify in court regarding criminal investigations and citations. Maintain safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic, enforcing laws and ordinances, investigating collisions, and reporting unsafe streets and facilities. Minimum Qualifications Age 21 or older at the time of hire. United States citizenship or legal right to work in the United States. High school diploma or equivalent (GED acceptable). Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. approved Police Academy within the last one year, or possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate dated within the last one year. Valid California Class C Driver License at the time of hire. Completed California P.O.S.T. training and received a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate within one year of hire. Ability to meet required fitness, physical, vision, and hearing standards as outlined by SDPD. No felony convictions, no domestic violence convictions, and not a registered sex offender. Emotional regulation and effective interpersonal relationships. Ability to thrive in diverse populations. Salary and Benefits Typical starting salary: approximately $7,141.00 per month. Eligible for bilingual pay (3.5% of base pay) if required. Uniform allowance of $900 annually after one year of service. Automatic enrollment in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS) for employees hired on or after July 10, 2021. Additional pay opportunities and benefits as outlined by SDPD. Notes Police Officer I positions require completion of Regional Academy Training and a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate within one year of hire. Positions may be assigned to a 4‑day/10‑hour rotating shift schedule depending on assignment.
