Police Officer (Academy Graduate/Lateral Entry)

Police Officer The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The officer will perform general police work, enforce laws, conduct traffic enforcement, and undertake special assignments in specialized phases of police and emergency work. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be a community‑service oriented individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, discretion, judgment, and initiative to work with the community to identify and resolve issues. Responsibilities Perform general police work in the presentation of crime and the enforcement of law and order. Conduct traffic enforcement and control. Carries special assignments in specialized phases of police and emergency work. Drive a police vehicle as part of duties and may be assigned to special details as needed. Establish order in extreme conditions and emergencies. Minimum Requirements Lateral Entry Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate and have been employed as a sworn full‑time Peace Officer in California within two years of offer. Successfully complete the P.O.S.T. requalification course if more than two years have passed. Out‑of‑state lateral applicants must possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Course Waiver and have been employed as a sworn full‑time Peace Officer within two years of offer. Academy Graduates Applicants must be in the final phase of an accredited P.O.S.T. Academy at the time of application. Must have successfully completed the academy and possess an Academy P.O.S.T. Certificate before offer of employment. Candidate Selection Process Application Review: Submit copies of CA P.O.S.T. certificates, waivers, or academy graduation certificates; review based on relevant education, training, and experience. Examination Process: Oral panel interview with mandatory 100% score in all components. Polygraph and background investigation required. Final Interview: Chief of Police interview; conditional offer subject to psychological and medical exam. Benefits and Compensation Lateral Police Officer Bonus: $20,000 Police Academy Graduate Bonus: $10,000 Referral Bonus for successful lateral police officer: $2,000 Uniform allowance: $1,250 annually; $1,200 credit for new hires. Shift Differential: Overlap shift 2.25%; night shift 3.25%. Longevity pay: Lump sum every 5 years, starting at $1,000 up to $3,000. Retirement Enrollment in CalPERS under the 2.7% @ 57 or 3% @ 50 plans, as applicable. Mandatory Reporting Mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
