Senior Mechanical Engineer, PE - Healthcare

Location: Charlotte, NC | Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire | Discipline: Mechanical (MEP)

About the Role

Healthcare mechanical design is where the stakes are highest - pressure relationships that keep infection out of an OR, air changes that protect immunocompromised patients, redundancy that has to hold when nothing else can fail. We're looking for a licensed Senior Mechanical Engineer to own that work across the Charlotte region and beyond.

You'll serve as Mechanical Engineer of Record on hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, medical office buildings, and outpatient facilities - guiding projects from schematic design through construction administration and putting your stamp on documents that matter. This is an ownership role: you'll lead project teams, mentor the engineers coming up behind you, and be the technical authority clients and AHJs turn to.

What You'll Own

• HVAC, central plant, hydronic and steam systems, and specialty ventilation design for healthcare occupancies.
• Pressurization, air change rates, and filtration strategies for ORs, isolation rooms, and other critical spaces.
• Load calculations, energy modeling, and equipment selection — performed and reviewed to code.
• Design compliance across ASHRAE 170, NFPA 99, FGI Guidelines, North Carolina Building/Mechanical Code, and NCDHSR requirements.
• Coordination with electrical, plumbing, and structural disciplines, plus architects and owners, to keep projects moving as one.
• Project scope, budget, and schedule — including site visits, submittal review, RFI responses, and construction administration.
• Mentorship: delegating to and developing designers and junior engineers, and reviewing their deliverables.

What You Bring

• PE license in North Carolina - or the ability to obtain one via comity within a defined window.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 7+ years of MEP consulting experience, with a real portfolio of healthcare projects behind you.
• Command of ASHRAE 170, NFPA 99, and FGI Guidelines as they apply to healthcare occupancies — including critical-space pressurization and ventilation requirements.
• Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; hands-on experience with Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, or comparable load and energy modeling software.
• The communication skills and presence to lead teams and own client relationships.

Bonus Points

• NCDHSR plan review experience and North Carolina hospital projects.
• EOR experience on acute-care facilities.
• Central plant / chilled water plant design experience.
• LEED accreditation, CEM, or other healthcare-specific credentials.
