Project Environmental Engineer or Scientist

Overview As a Project Environmental Engineer or Scientist, you will be responsible for planning, performing, and managing fieldwork to collect environmental data (soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor), overseeing cleanup construction, evaluating and interpreting environmental data, performing engineering and scientific analysis, preparing cleanup documents (work plans, reports, and design drawings), and mentoring junior staff. This role involves collaboration with senior engineers and geologists. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Plan, perform, and manage field explorations and environmental data collection (soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor). Field activities may include drilling and test pitting to collect soil samples, sediment grab sampling and coring, and monitoring well installation and groundwater sampling. Evaluate and interpret field and laboratory environmental data, perform engineering and scientific analysis, and develop solutions to complex problems. Evaluate the fate and transport of environmental contaminants in soils, sediments, groundwater, and vapor, and develop conceptual site models to evaluate contaminant exposure pathways to receptors. Develop solutions to environmental problems by evaluating remedial technologies to meet the requirements of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) as required by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). Prepare remedial investigation work plans, sampling and analysis plans, and data reports. Support MCP compliance through preparation of Phase I/II submittals, RAM Plans and RAM Status Reports, IRA Plans and completion documentation, and LSP Opinion Letters. Coordinate regulatory notifications and filings on environmental remediation projects involving multiple media (soil, groundwater, vapor). Prepare design documents and supporting deliverables, including engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, and engineers’ estimates. Prepare permit applications and coordinate with regulatory agencies to obtain project permits. Support clients with project bidding/contract solicitation and contractor selection for cleanup construction. Oversee cleanup construction activities, including remedial excavation, dredging of contaminated sediment and debris, installation of sediment caps, operations and maintenance of in-situ remediation systems, and site restoration. Provide project closeout and long-term monitoring support on environmental remediation projects. Perform project and task management duties, including developing scopes of work and budgets, client coordination, subcontractor solicitation, invoicing, cost control, and contract reviews. Communicate effectively with clients, regulators, contractors, and project staff throughout the project lifecycle. Mentor and train junior staff. Essential duties and responsibilities may vary based on projects. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering or geology; Master’s degree preferred. 3+ years of environmental consulting or related professional experience. Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) license required. Familiarity with environmental regulations, including MCP and how to apply them. Experience managing and performing environmental field investigations (soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor) and oversight of cleanup construction. Ability to prepare proposals, work plans, data reports, RAMs, Opinion Letters, and design documents under supervision of a senior engineer/geologist. Familiarity with Local, State, and Federal permitting processes applicable to environmental cleanup projects is preferred. Strong project management and technical environmental skills. Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Works well independently and as part of project teams within GeoEngineers’ environmental group. Strong verbal and written communication and technical writing skills. A valid driver’s license is required. Commitment to safety, including knowledge of State and Federal health and safety requirements. Completion of 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training preferred. Physical Requirements / Work Environment All candidates are subject to background and reference checks. All candidates are required to participate in our medical surveillance program. Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities and heavy work, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force on occasion. Ability to work at a computer for extended periods and view a monitor. Ability to travel for short-term and long-term assignments as needed. Wear appropriate safety equipment in the field and complete required health and safety training prior to fieldwork. Salary and Benefits GeEngineers’ salary ranges are location-based. Our best estimate of the salary range for Project Environmental Engineer, located in Boston, MA is $92,000 - $130,000 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for a Project Environmental Scientist, located in Boston, MA is $80,000 - $113,000 annually. Compensation offered is based on education, experience, and other factors.
