Clinical Nurse

Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse provides high-quality clinical nursing care adhering to professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is accountable for coordinating and delivering patient care through the application of the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties

Education

Identifies and addresses personal learning needs.
Attends educational programs relevant to identified needs.
Utilizes patient education materials suited for the patient population.
Assesses the readiness of patients, families, and caregivers to learn.
Evaluates the developmental level of patients and factors that may affect learning capability.

Evaluation of Care

Identifies expected patient outcomes.
Seeks guidance as needed for plan of care revisions.
Engages in discussions with the interdisciplinary team to evaluate patient care.
Communicates pertinent information to ensure continuity of care.

Implementation

Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex issues, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.
Performs necessary bedside point-of-care testing as per patient care plans.
Adheres to healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures when delivering care.
Organizes and prioritizes care based on the needs of patients and their families.
Consults with appropriate resources on complex patient care issues, unusual teaching needs, and discharge planning risks.

Leadership

With assistance, develops goals for professional growth and addresses limitations.
Achieves set goals within specified timeframes or renegotiates them with supervision.
Maintains knowledge of activities that foster intra/interdepartmental collaboration.
Participates in the development and achievement of unit objectives and performance improvement initiatives.
Effectively utilizes communication systems.
Contributes to promoting cost-effective care.
Provides constructive feedback to colleagues.
Stays informed about public policy and regulatory guidelines influencing the healthcare environment.
Promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all.

Patient Assessment

Recognizes and analyzes data from complex situations to prioritize care.
Incorporates relevant physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs into assessments.
Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful information for communication.
Anticipates discharge needs for individual patients and families.
Builds relationships with families to help them advocate for the patient and their own needs.

Planning

Collaborates with patients and families to formulate or update care plans.
Utilizes available multidisciplinary resources in the care planning process.
Begins to employ comprehensive communication methods to convey planning efforts.
Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic considerations in patient care planning.
Demonstrates effective task prioritization for patients with complex needs.

Research

Reads relevant journals to stay updated on applicable studies or articles.
Shares insights and inquiries with staff for evaluation of applicability in practice.

Required Skills & Experience

Minimum one (1) year of nursing experience.

Education

Required: Nursing Diploma OR ADN/ASN from an accredited nursing school.
Preferred: BSN or MSN from an accredited nursing school.

Certifications & Licensure

Required: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification (AHA or ARC).
