Acute Care Surgeon - Norwich, CT ### The OpportunityThe Acute Care Surgery Division at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT is recruiting a fellowship-trained Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgeon to join an established team. Backus is an ACS-verified Level III Trauma Center and regional emergency general surgery referral center serving eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island.For a surgeon who enjoys broad-based, "head-to-toe" general surgery, wants to remain highly operative, and would like the opportunity to develop areas of individual clinical expertise, this is an exceptional ACS practice fit.### What Makes Practice Here Exceptional High-Volume Emergency General Surgery The service provides trauma and emergency general surgery care for 400,000+ people across eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island, serving as an accepting center for multiple hospitals throughout the region. Surgeons individually average 330 cases per year . Surgical Critical Care Surgeons lead the care of critically ill surgical patients with 24/7 in-house experienced APP coverage. The SICU primarily supports the EGS and trauma service in addition to a consult service for subspecialty surgical patients experiencing critical illness. Established Chest Wall Injury Program ACS surgeons regularly perform VATS, thoracotomy, and surgical stabilization of rib fractures. Surgeons with chest wall injury experience can immediately participate; partners interested in developing these skills will receive direct mentorship and operative opportunities. Robust Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Practice Approximately 50 complex abdominal wall reconstructions annually using minimally invasive/robotic and open techniques, plus a substantial minimally invasive and robotic hernia practice with opportunity to participate in and grow. Integrated Robotics All current ACS surgeons perform robotic surgery in both emergency and elective general surgery, with access to elective robotic block time and mentorship for those developing robotic skills. Elective Practice Development ACS surgeons maintain active elective general surgery practices supported by 3 full-time RNs and 2 full-time APPs. Incoming surgeons have protected opportunity to develop an elective practice in hernia, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, foregut surgery, colorectal surgery, chest wall surgery, endocrine surgery, or other areas of interest. Collaborative Environment Intentional mentorship and professional growth across clinical, educational, and administrative interests including trauma administration, quality improvement, robotics, emergency general surgery, and surgical education. Surgical Education The division directly supports a systemwide Surgical PA Fellowship and hosts senior residents from the UConn General Surgery Residency Program for an immersive, apprentice-style rotation. Current surgical partners hold faculty appointments with the UConn School of Medicine. Community-Hospital Breadth with Tertiary-Level Support Backus is supported locally by interventional radiology, colorectal surgery, ENT, neurosurgery, urology, orthopedic surgery, and other surgical specialties — with ready access to a quaternary ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center.### Ideal Candidate

• Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery
• Fellowship trained in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery
• Comfortable independently managing complex acute care surgical and critically ill patients
