Construction Insurance Program Manager

OCIP & Builders Risk Insurance Program Manager

The University of Michigan is seeking a dynamic and solution-driven OCIP & Builders Risk Insurance Program Manager to spearhead risk management and insurance strategies for major university construction projects, including the rolling OCIP program. This is a key leadership role, reporting to the Director of Insurance and Claims Administration, and supporting a collaborative team that includes a Claims Liaison, Program Controller, Loss Control Specialist, and Contractor Relations Support Specialist.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the administration, management, and optimization of the Owners Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) and Builders Risk Insurance for university construction projects of varying scope.
  • Oversee insurance compliance and coordination for the majority of construction types across the university, ensuring adequate coverage and efficient handling of claims.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between project teams, contractors, insurance carriers, and university leadership units, presenting recommendations and strategic solutions.
  • Develop and maintain robust policies and procedures for risk identification, loss control, and claims management.
  • Guide and mentor direct/indirect reports within the insurance and claims team, promoting collaboration and professional growth.
  • Work closely with multi-unit leadership and external partners to anticipate emerging risks and implement innovative coverage solutions.
  • Monitor trends in construction insurance, update best practices, and ensure environmental and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare regular reports and present findings to senior administration, advocating for continuous improvement in risk management.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in risk management, insurance, business, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in insurance coordination or risk management, with direct involvement in OCIP or construction-related insurance programs.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or equivalent are strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including supervision or indirect management of team members.
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and organizational skills; ability to work with multi-unit leadership groups.
  • Proven track record implementing insurance programs for complex projects.
  • Proficiency with insurance administration software and Microsoft Office suite.
Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
