Senior Product Development Engineer

Perfect Lens is developing an advanced laser-based manufacturing technology focused on transforming the production of intraocular lenses (IOLs) and other precision optical components. Our proprietary platform enables highly localized material modification within optical materials and has the potential to significantly simplify manufacturing workflows, reduce inventory complexity, and enable new levels of customization and product flexibility. We are currently transitioning from advanced R&D into productization, manufacturing readiness, and early customer deployment. While our initial focus is ophthalmic manufacturing, the underlying technology platform also has broader potential applications across additional industries and manufacturing processes. Our team operates in a highly collaborative startup-style environment focused on practical problem solving, rapid iteration, engineering ownership, and real-world execution. Purpose and Scope: Perfect Lens is seeking a highly hands-on and self-sufficient Senior Product Development Engineer to help transition an advanced prototype platform into a manufacturable, supportable, customer-ready product. The ideal candidate is a practical problem solver with startup experience who is comfortable wearing multiple hats and independently driving projects forward in a resource-constrained environment. This role requires someone who can identify technical gaps, improve system reliability, organize documentation, coordinate with vendors and external partners, and support product commercialization. This is a highly collaborative role with significant ownership and direct impact on product direction and execution. Responsibilities / Duties: Take ownership of engineering tasks required to transition an existing prototype system into a manufacturable and supportable product platform Identify technical gaps, documentation deficiencies, manufacturability risks, and serviceability concerns Improve system reliability, simplify designs where appropriate, and optimize systems for low-volume production Create and organize engineering documentation Participate directly in hands‑on engineering activities including troubleshooting, integration, testing, assembly, and system validation Coordinate with external vendors, fabrication houses, manufacturing partners, and engineering consultants Support CE, UL, and regulatory preparation activities together with external specialists Help define practical manufacturing, service, and lifecycle strategies for customer-deployed systems Support early customer deployments and technical interactions with strategic partners Work cross-functionally with optics, software, electronics, manufacturing, and operations teams Help establish milestones, priorities, execution plans, and realistic engineering timelines Background / Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Optical/Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field 5+ years in product development Experience transitioning prototypes into manufacturable or customer-ready systems Comfortable working directly with vendors, contractors, and external engineering groups Strong troubleshooting and practical problem-solving skills Strong hands‑on engineering experience in complex multidisciplinary systems Experience working in startup, small-company, or resource-constrained engineering environments Proven ability to independently move projects forward Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams Ability to create and maintain structured engineering documentation Ability to prioritize tasks and make practical engineering tradeoff decisionsLaser systems or photonics Optical or opto‑mechanical systems Manufacturing transfer and productization Regulated products or certification processes (CE, UL, FDA, IEC, ISO) Benefits: Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance Life Insurance 401(k) Retirement Plan, Employer match Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) Health Savings Account (HSA) Dependent Care Assistance Monthly Uber eats credit Birthday Celebrations and Employee Appreciation Events Requirements: Candidate must be a United States Citizen or a permanent United States Resident All Perfect Lens, LLC employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 Why this Role is Unique This role offers the opportunity to directly shape the transition of an advanced prototype platform into a real-world commercial product.
