Maintenance/Construction Tech IV (Temporary)

Position Summary This is a temporary position at the NC Department of Agriculture – Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) located at 4400 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh, NC. Hourly rate of pay: $30.00 (based on education and/or relevant experience). Temporary assignment: no leave or retirement benefits offered. Employees working 30+ hours per week may be eligible for health insurance under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time, and individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the position. Responsibilities Maintain and supervise physical plant operations, including high‑pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and incinerators. Maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction tasks. Supervise maintenance technicians and coordinate subcontractors during repair or improvement projects. Perform troubleshooting of complex mechanical systems and exercise initiative and judgment. Work safely in areas that may contain necropsies, animal carcasses, biological materials, incineration systems, and associated odors. All employees receive appropriate safety training and PPE. Travel to three satellite laboratories (Griffin Laboratory – Monroe, Northwestern Laboratory – Elkin, and Western Laboratory – Fletcher) once per month for day trips; occasional overnight travel across the state may be required. Attend occasional after‑hours work at the Raleigh location and be available for emergency call‑back duties during adverse weather or other required times. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of building codes, blueprints, and building automation control systems. Ability to anticipate downstream impacts of mechanical systems on laboratory operations. Ability to supervise technicians and contractors. Valid North Carolina driver’s license. Strong time‑management skills; dependable and reliable. Preferred: Current EPA Type I, II, III, or Universal technician certification as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, SubpartF. Preferred: Pesticide applicator’s license, obtainable within the first year of employment. Ability to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes. Minimum Education and Experience High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED). At least two (2) years of experience performing journey‑level tasks in two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience may qualify.
