Job Description Building: Garfield Elementary School Position: Special Education / CI Paraeducator (2 positions) Hours/Times/Calendar: 8:10 a.m. – 3:20 p.m. Effective: Immediately Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent (GED) Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education Meet a rigorous standard of quality or pass a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC) A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence‑based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) trained or willing to be trained Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require requirement #1 plus one or more of 2‑5 above achieved prior to being hired. Job Responsibilities Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of learners with mental impairments Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff Provide assistance and instruction in areas of personal hygiene, toileting, health and fitness, and community living Participate in field trips and home visits when necessary Attend summer or after‑school in‑services related to the needs of mentally impaired learners Understand and respect students’ privacy rights as provided by FERPA Promote positive self‑esteem and encourage academic growth Use good judgment to ensure the safety of all students and staff Respond flexibly to changes in assignments or emergency situations per building principal instructions Perform other related duties necessary to ensure the success of students and the program Provide physical strength and stamina for non‑violent intervention when necessary Present oneself in a professional manner and maintain a good public image of the School District EEO Statement The Board of Education does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and transgender identity), disability, age, religion, height, weight, marital or family status, military status, ancestry, genetic information or any other legally protected category (collectively, “Protected Classes”), in its programs and activities, including employment opportunities.
