Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor)

Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Office Chief, a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Engineer will manage and oversee staff to analyze, provide/develop standard plans, specifications, special provisions, design methodologies, software, guidance, and other tools related to the engineering, construction, and rehabilitation of asphalt pavement. The incumbent is responsible for performing engineering analysis and review of asphalt materials to provide recommendations and direction to the Office Chief, Deputy Division Chief, Division Chief, other functional units in the Division, Headquarters, the Districts and external partners on the pavement standards contained in the Department manuals, specifications, plans and supporting documents. Partners with industry, academia, local agencies, and national/international organizations on asphalt materials related issues. The incumbent will perform, coordinate, and/or monitor technical studies and prepare and review reports on complex problems/issues relating to pavements and oversee teams, prepare work plans and monitor progress to assure timely delivery of office projects, products, and other assignments.

Working Conditions

Position located at 2389 Gateway Oaks Dr Sacramento, Sacramento County.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

• This position require(s) a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment. 

• Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.

2. Describe your experience with collaborating with internal and external stakeholders (District staff, Headquarters functional units, industry, Federal Highway Administration [FHWA], academia). Discuss how you communicate complex technical concepts, resolve differing perspectives, and maintain productive working partnerships.

3. Describe your ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and make effective presentations.

4. Describe your leadership approach. With technical/engineering staff, highlight how you will be able to unite a diverse staff, balance multiple priorities, coach/mentor staff, and ensure deliverables are completed on schedule.
