Substance Use Disorder Counselor /Clinician

The Richmond Recovery Court is seeking a Substance Use Disorder Counselor /Clinician to provide individual, group, and family counseling services to participants involved in the Recovery Court program. This position is responsible for conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, coordinating supportive services, and helping participants address barriers related to substance use, mental health, employment, and overall stability. The ideal candidate is flexible, team-oriented, and able to work collaboratively with court staff, treatment providers, and community partners in a fast-paced, accountability-focused environment. Some evening, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage may be required. The list and duties are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time. Responsibilities Conduct participant intakes, screenings, biopsychosocial assessments, and eligibility determinations Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment and service plans Provide individual, group, and family counseling services in accordance with Recovery Court program requirements Maintain timely, accurate, and professional documentation within the electronic health record system Complete required assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, case documentation, and reports in compliance with program, grant, and licensing standards Coordinate referrals and connect participants to community resources and supportive services, including mental health, housing, employment, medical, and recovery services Monitor participant progress and collaborate with the Recovery Court team regarding treatment recommendations and participant needs Maintain client files and ensure confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards Advocate for participants and assist with reducing barriers to treatment and recovery Collaborate professionally with court staff, treatment providers, community partners, families, and other stakeholders Participate in staffing meetings, case reviews, trainings, and other professional development activities Provide crisis intervention and support as needed Assist with coverage and other program duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, behavioral health treatment, and case management practices Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and trauma‑informed approaches to care Familiarity with community resources, treatment services, and support systems for individuals with substance use and co‑occurring disorders Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment while maintaining professionalism and composure Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills Ability to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries with participants, families, service providers, and court staff Ability to prepare accurate documentation, reports, treatment plans, and case notes in a timely manner Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic health record systems Ability to understand, interpret, and follow written and verbal instructions Ability to assess participant needs, make appropriate recommendations, and support informed decision‑making Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, criminal justice, human services, behavioral health, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience. Experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders, co‑occurring mental health disorders, and justice‑involved populations is strongly preferred. Experience providing substance use counseling, case management, treatment planning, crisis intervention, relapse prevention, and coordination of supportive community‑based services is also preferred. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Be proficient in basic computer applications and electronic documentation systems. Be able to pass a comprehensive background check. Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license. Licenses & Certification Requirements Specialized certifications or licensure related to substance use treatment, behavioral health, or counseling (such as CSAC, LPC, Resident in Counseling, CPRS, or similar credentials) are considered a plus, but are not required for the position. #J-18808-Ljbffr City of Richmond
