Overview Texas Oncology is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team at the Dallas Sammons location. This Full‑Time position operates Monday‑Friday, 8:30 am‑5:00 pm. The role may be Level 1, 2 or Sr based on relevant experience. Texas Oncology is the largest community oncology provider in the country, with more than 600 providers across 220 sites in Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. Role Overview Responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures for moderate and high complexity laboratory tests. Initiates and follows quality assurance and safety policies, performs specimen collection, trains staff, and may act as primary operator for laboratory instruments. Performs clinical tests used for disease treatment and diagnosis, demonstrates clinical thinking, and adheres to quality guidelines. Responsibilities Assist with phlebotomy and specimen collection, ensuring pre‑authorization and consent forms are completed. Assist with special procedures as needed (e.g., bone marrow in‑room). Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and record maintenance. Perform specimen analysis on Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens. Maintain and operate laboratory equipment; perform daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance. Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance, recording lot numbers. Participate in proficiency testing and report results at least once a year. Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete WBC differentials on normal and abnormal smears. Perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment. Record results and maintain files; process specimens for send‑out testing. Identify and resolve problems affecting test performance; document corrective actions. Maintain documentation—accessioning logs, test report logs, QC logs, equipment records, and checklists. Verify critical results and document follow‑up. Maintain adequate inventory of supplies; prepare reagents, stains, and solutions as needed; restock laboratory area. Sends specimens to reference laboratories when testing is not performed in‑house. Process incoming orders for lab testing including reference laboratory specimens. Process incoming and in‑house results for charting. Chart patient results in a timely manner. Properly identify and band patients for blood product transfusion; process specimens per local bloodbank policy. Train employees in laboratory procedures. May act as primary operator for at least one laboratory instrument. Participate in development of new instruments and procedures as needed. Act as a resource for laboratory science information. May oversee daily laboratory activities in the absence of a supervisor. Comply with quality assurance standards. Adhere to OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures; comply with regulatory agency standards. Properly dispose of hazardous materials. Maintain a clean working environment. Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information. Perform CLIA classified moderate and high complexity testing with minimal supervision. Qualifications Level 1 Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related healthcare field, or relevant experience. Associate’s Degree plus four (4) years of related work experience. Eight (8) years of related work experience. Current state license if required. AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification preferred. Position is entry level and requires no experience. Licensure and certification requirements depend on the state. Except for grandfathered situations, a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology is required. Level 2 (in addition to Level 1 requirements) Minimum of three years of experience. Level Sr (in addition to Level 1 and 2 requirements) Minimum of five years of experience. Physical Demands Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye‑hand coordination in operation and manipulation of complex laboratory equipment. Requires sitting/standing for extensive periods, use of hands and arms; occasionally lifts up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision, color perception, and hearing within normal range. Requires legible handwriting. Work Environment Work is performed in an office environment with significant interaction with management, staff, external auditors, and clients.
