Environmental Consultant - Groundwater

Job Summary Wake County Public Health seeks an Environmental Consultant to support a leading‑edge private well program. Responsibilities include site evaluations, permit creation and review, inspections for well construction, repair and abandonment, water quality sampling, interpretation of results, and consultative services to residents. Primary Duties Enforce state and local regulations governing construction, testing, and abandonment of private drinking water wells, including permitting, siting, inspection, and sampling. Provide consultation to homeowners with private wells regarding construction, water quality, and water quantity concerns. Work with state and local agencies to investigate groundwater contamination incidents. Assist homeowners with questions or concerns about their wells. Respond to citizen complaints about wells and conduct enforcement action in accordance with approved procedures, applicable rules and regulations, and ordinances. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field. Three years of experience in environmental planning, inspections, or engineering. Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Equivalent education and experience accepted. Preferred Qualifications Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Licensed Geologist, Professional Engineer, or related licensure. Desired Traits Knowledge of local and state regulations governing wells or environmental health. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer‑service skills. Ability to independently prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple assignments. Detail‑oriented with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Ability to analyze situations and offer informed recommendations and guidance to resolve problems.
