Job Title: Quality Inspector – 1st Shift Job Description

The Quality Inspector on 1st shift ensures that all products and services meet established specifications and customer requirements. Acting as the eyes of the customer, this role verifies product quality throughout the manufacturing process, communicates nonconformances, and supports continuous improvement activities across multiple departments.

Responsibilities

• Perform in-process inspections to confirm dimensional and cosmetic specifications are met on products being manufactured and on products ready for final inspection.

• Conduct incoming inspections on raw materials, sub-contracted finishing, and externally produced items as required.

• Communicate required adjustments and rework instructions for non-compliant material to appropriate personnel and participate in Material Review Board (MRB) activities.

• Document inspection results on applicable reports, including First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) and other inspection records, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

• Perform process audits and product inspections throughout the manufacturing process using a range of inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gages, thread gages, pin gages, thickness testers, and gloss meters.

• Support and potentially operate advanced inspection equipment, with the opportunity to be trained on Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and portable CMM systems such as FARO ARM to meet inspection requirements.

• Assist with the calibration process of all inspection equipment, including collecting, tagging, distributing, and updating calibration status in the appropriate databases.

• Work with team members to implement corrective and preventive actions that address root causes of quality issues.

• Provide support, training, and clear communication to production personnel on quality standards, inspection findings, and required corrective actions.

• Cover multiple departments, including sheet metal fabrication, machining, welding, metal blending, finishing (masking, painting, and related processes), assembly, and final inspection.

• Use Microsoft Office and computer-based systems to record data, maintain inspection records, and support quality reporting.

• Manage time effectively to complete inspections within required schedules while maintaining high attention to detail.

• Adapt to changing priorities, tasks, and work schedules in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Essential Skills

• Experience working in a mechanical fabrication environment, such as machining, sheet metal, welding, and related processes.

• Excellent blueprint reading and interpretation skills.

• Good understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) (preferred but strongly beneficial).

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and strong general computer and typing skills.

• Ability to use a wide range of precision measuring equipment, including calipers, micrometers, height gages, gage blocks, thread gages, and pin gages.

• Willingness to learn and, ideally, prior experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and portable CMM equipment such as FARO ARM, with familiarity with PC-DMIS software considered an asset.

• Proficiency in geometry and trigonometry (machine shop math) to interpret and verify complex dimensions.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining strong collaboration with production and quality staff.

• Ability to learn quickly, retain technical information, and apply knowledge to new situations.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills to identify and address quality issues.

• Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.

• Self-starter mindset with a detail-oriented, results-driven, energetic, and proactive approach.

• Flexibility to handle changing tasks, priorities, and work schedules while working effectively in a fast-paced environment.

• High school diploma or GED, or an associate degree and/or experience in a mechanical field involving machining, sheet metal, welding, spot welding, painting and powder coating, plating, or assembly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a mechanical fabrication environment similar to complex metal products or advanced manufacturing settings.

• Previous use of CMM systems (such as Sharp Global Advantage with PC-DMIS software) and portable CMM equipment (such as FARO ARM – EDGE version).

• Interest in or willingness to take training to become an AWS Certified Associate Welding Inspector (AWS-CAWI), which is considered a strong asset.

• Exposure to departments such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, welding, metal blending, finishing, assembly, and final inspection.

• Comfort working with process inspections, process compliance, and process audits in a manufacturing environment.

• Background in quality control or quality inspection roles.

• Ability to provide training or guidance to production personnel on quality topics.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing setting with regular exposure to heavy equipment, machinery, and associated noise levels. You will frequently walk, stand, bend, squat, and move continuously throughout the shift, and you must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. The standard schedule for this position is 1st shift, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The facility is kept in excellent condition with strong lighting and clear, interactive diagrams and instructions in each department to support safe and accurate work. You will work around precision measuring instruments, inspection tools, and computer systems in a dynamic, fast-paced production environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Binghamton, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
