Environmental Field Technician

New Tech Global is seeking an Environmental Field Technician for a client located in Midland, TX or Carlsbad, NM. This is a direct hire opportunity.


This is a field-forward position based in Midland, TX or Carlsbad, NM, supporting vegetation, special species, remediation, GIS, mapping, and reporting projects across oil and gas and rangeland environments.

Position Summary:
The Environmental Field Specialist supports field-based environmental work across the Permian Basin and surrounding regions, including vegetation and ecological assessments, special species surveys, upstream oil and gas release assessment, remediation, monitoring, and site closure support. This role collects defensible field data, documents site conditions, evaluates vegetation and habitat impacts, and prepares figures, maps, GIS deliverables, and technical reports for client, agency, regulatory, and internal use. The ideal candidate has strong plant identification, field ecology, GIS, and technical writing skills, with the ability to work independently in remote oilfield and rangeland settings.

Key Responsibilities:
Field Surveys, Habitat Assessments, and Remediation Support

• Conduct vegetation surveys, ecological assessments, rangeland monitoring, special species surveys, habitat assessments, and upstream oil and gas release assessment/remediation support in accordance with applicable NMSLO, BLM, NRCS, agency, regulatory, and project-specific requirements.
• Identify, assess, and document plant species, plant communities, ecological sites, habitat suitability, species observations, soil stability, erosion indicators, hydrologic function, and overall rangeland condition.
• Collect and document soil, vegetation, GPS, photographic, habitat, species observation, and remediation field data to characterize impacts, evaluate site conditions and remediation progress, support avoidance/mitigation recommendations, and prepare closure documentation.
• Apply standard and agency-approved field methods, including transects, quadrats, line-point intercept, cover/frequency/density measurements, and special species survey protocols.
• Perform upstream oil and gas site assessments and remediation support following releases of petroleum hydrocarbons and/or produced water.

Data, Mapping, Reporting, and Coordination

• Collect accurate field data using GPS units, tablets, GIS applications, and specialized sampling equipment.
• Prepare clear figures, maps, GIS layers, site sketches, spatial analyses, and technical reports for agency, client, regulatory, and internal use.
• Interpret field findings in support of grazing management, NEPA review, land-use decisions, habitat/restoration projects, remediation planning, and site closure.
• Coordinate with agency personnel, clients, and internal project teams to ensure field work, documentation, and deliverables meet project objectives.
• Plan field logistics, maintain equipment, follow safety protocols, and work independently in remote and rugged environments.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Rangeland Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• 2-5 years of relevant field experience in vegetation surveys, ecological assessments, special species surveys, rangeland monitoring, site assessment, or remediation support.
• Strong plant identification skills, particularly southwestern flora and arid/semi-arid ecosystems.
• Experience with vegetation sampling methods, rangeland monitoring protocols, GPS/GIS data collection, and technical documentation.
• Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GPS equipment, and spatial data management.
• Ability to prepare concise technical reports, maps, figures, and field documentation for regulatory or client deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with BLM allotments, NEPA projects, state trust lands, special species surveys, invasive species management, habitat assessment, restoration ecology, or oil and gas remediation/closure projects.
• Knowledge of BLM Technical References, AIM protocols, and agency reporting expectations.
• Advanced GIS capability, including spatial modeling, map production, and data integration.
• Certified Rangeland Professional or equivalent credential.
