Department Overview

This role operates Monday through Friday, with no weekend, holiday, or on-call duties. The outpatient setting handles approximately 25% surgical procedures, 65% gastrointestinal (GI) procedures, including advanced GI techniques, and 10% pain management procedures.

Position Summary

Surgical technologists play a vital role within the surgical care team, assisting in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care that aligns with our mission of delivering quality service. Responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the evaluation and documentation of patient care.
• Working under the supervision of a surgeon and other licensed clinical professionals to ensure safe and effective surgical procedures.
• Maintaining a safe operating room environment and ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly.
• Accountability for items used during procedures and maintaining an organized sterile field.
• Applying knowledge of aseptic principles and surgical techniques to support the execution of invasive and diagnostic procedures.
• Preparing the surgical environment, ensuring all supplies are sterile and ready for use.
• Assisting in patient preparation prior to procedures.
• Conducting quality assurance checks on sterile and unsterile supplies.
• Participating in reconciliation activities post-procedure.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and critical thinking abilities, adapting to a fast-paced environment and changes in responsibilities with ease. Additional administrative duties may be required for patient case preparation. LPN duties are included for those with an LPN license.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or an approved practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is mandatory.
• Experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
• Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical and surgical terminology, instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures gained through post-secondary education.
• National certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
• If an LPN, must hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board or possess multi-state licensure privileges.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 60 days of employment.
• Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) and competency training as required by the department and facility.
• If working in North Dakota and not an LPN, must be registered on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Registry at the start of employment.
