Fleet Mechanic I – Hiring Range: $25.22 – $29.00 / hour Performs skilled entry‑level inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline‑ and diesel‑powered vehicles and heavy equipment. Requires basic mechanical knowledge, problem‑solving ability, and basic skills using available materials and tools. Performs minor and major repair work on light and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment. Ability to repair and replace components such as brakes, steering parts, batteries, belts, hoses, and suspension components under supervision with training. Changes tires on small and large equipment with guidance as needed. Ability to reliably perform routine preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication with training. Learn and assist with vehicle emission testing and related documentation. Learn and assist with badging, outfitting, and setup of new vehicles and equipment. Ability to perform basic vehicle and equipment inspections to identify visible mechanical deficiencies and report findings to lead mechanics or supervisors. Learn and assist with fabrication, modification, and repair of parts using shop tools and available materials. Work as part of a team and follow instructions while developing independent work skills. Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities on work orders under supervision. Learn to read and interpret maintenance manuals, diagrams, and technical instructions. Follow all City safety rules, environmental regulations, and workplace policies at all times. Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work progress, equipment condition, and safety concerns. Perform additional entry‑level mechanical and shop support duties as assigned. Equipment Operation Automated Refuse Trash Trucks Backhoes Wheel Loaders Light‑and Heavy‑Duty Gasoline and Diesel‑Powered Vehicles Small Engine and Motorized Equipment Uses shop equipment and basic diagnostic equipment such as lifts, welders, hydraulic presses, scanners, compressors, and hand/power tools under guidance and in accordance with safety procedures. Test‑drives vehicles and equipment to verify basic repairs and ensure proper operation. Learn to recognize safety hazards or operational deficiencies and report concerns to supervisor. Report mechanical issues to supervisor and assist with basic repair planning and preventative maintenance schedules. Operate equipment safely in shop and field conditions in accordance with City and OSHA safety regulations. Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent. Technical automotive coursework, vocational training, or related certification is preferred. Prior diversified experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and major repair of a variety of light‑and heavy‑duty gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles and equipment, preferred. Basic knowledge servicing engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems preferred. Entry‑level experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred. Certifications Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment. Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test. Air Brake Certification within six (6) months of employment. A/C Recycle & Recovery Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. State of Colorado Diesel Emissions Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. First Aid/CPR Certification preferred. Ability to learn to fabricate, modify, and repair parts using available materials and resources. Attention to detail with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately. Working Environment Work is performed in both indoor shop and outdoor environments and may be subject to extreme weather conditions at times. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, hazardous materials, noise, vibration, and varying temperatures is expected. Commits to performing journeyman‑level mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic repairs on equipment while complying with all City policies and safety regulations. Responsibility Highlights Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic problems on gasoline and diesel‑powered engines, vehicles, and equipment. Repairs and rebuilds components such as transmissions, engines, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, and hydraulic systems. Experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred.
