State & Local Tax Associate Attorney (3–5 Years) – Am Law Firm | Chicago, IL | Multistate Tax Planning & Controversy A nationally recognized Am Law firm is seeking a State & Local Tax Associate Attorney for its Chicago, Illinois office. This role offers sophisticated multistate tax work, partner‑track advancement, and collaboration with experienced SALT attorneys. Key Responsibilities Advise clients on corporate income and franchise tax matters across multiple jurisdictions Consult clients on sales, use, payroll, and property tax issues Assist with state and local tax planning, structuring, and transactional analysis Support clients in tax controversy matters, audits, and administrative proceedings Conduct legal research related to evolving multistate tax regulations and compliance requirements Collaborate with partners and senior attorneys on strategic SALT projects Draft memoranda, legal analyses, and tax‑related documentation Provide support for personal income tax and audit defense matters Analyze multistate tax implications involving corporate transactions and business operations Work closely with cross‑office legal teams on sophisticated client matters Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school 3 to 5 years of dedicated State & Local Tax experience Strong knowledge of corporate income tax, franchise tax, sales and use tax matters Experience with multistate tax planning and compliance issues Exposure to tax controversy or litigation matters preferred Excellent research, analytical, writing, and communication skills Ability to work collaboratively across offices and practice groups Strong organizational and time‑management abilities Attention to detail and sound business judgment Admission to practice law in the state of Illinois Culture & Firm Appeal This Am Law firm is known for its entrepreneurial and flexible workplace culture, empowering associates to shape professional development and long‑term career goals.
