Who We Are:

With three campuses along Colorado’s Front Range, FRCC is the state’s largest community college. We enroll close to 28,000 students annually from our diverse service area, which offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities. 

Each year approximately 5,000 FRCC students transfer to four-year universities and FRCC offers more than 36 career training programs that prepare students for immediate employment and rewarding careers. Last year, more than 5,000 high school students took concurrent enrollment classes with us, earning college credit without having to pay college tuition. Job Summary:

The Disability Support Services (DSS) Coordinator advocates for the inclusion of students with disabilities and assists the college in maintaining compliance with federal disability statutes and FRCC policies. This position is the primary resource for all services to students with disabilities at Front Range Community College, providing direct service and facilitating related support services.

The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of different types of disabilities and medical conditions, accessibility standards and practices, and academic accommodations, and serves as a resource on disability inclusion and accessibility to the college community. The DSS Coordinator will be student-centered and will contribute to DSS practices that are equity centered.

This position does have the opportunity to work remotely occasionally but does require a strong on-campus presence and may require occasional travel to all three FRCC campuses.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Provision of Academic Accommodations and Assistive Technologies

• Utilize an interactive intake process to determine student eligibility for disability-related support services, and the specific types of supports needed on an individual basis (e.g. accommodations, assistive technology).  

• Assist students in learning assistive technology and supportive learning tools, and track student use through established procedures.  

• Maintain knowledge on current and updated disability legislation and actively advocate for its adherence.  

DSS Student Case Management    

• Serve as a point of contact and introduce students to campus and community resources.   

• Coach students on strategies for success to include: study skills, managing test anxiety, developing self-advocacy skills, and implementing problem solving/coping strategies.   

• Facilitate the partnership and coordinate accommodations between students with disabilities and faculty.    

Campus/Community Outreach and Education

• Serve as subject matter expert on best practices in accommodations and disability and its applications within higher education.   

• Serve as a resource person for staff, faculty, students and the community to increase their understanding of disability and how accommodations support student success.  

• Act as an ADA advocate including observations and reporting of ADA physical and remote environment concerns.   

• Educate college community regarding accessibility of course materials (implementing Universal Design for Learning strategies.)   

• Participate in committees to ensure the disability-perspective is represented and to represent the college   

Administrative Work

• Maintain databases for tracking DSS student requests for services and learning outcomes.  

• Maintain student files related to accommodations   

Competencies/KSAs:

Knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act, & Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973: Ensure FRCC is remaining compliant with the laws, and to guide decision making regarding appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.    

Assistive Technology: Provide the best assistance to students to be successful in classroom.

Data Usage: Looks at the data within the department, paying particular attention to what the data shows about the department's performance and student impact.  Works with the next level supervisor to brainstorm changes that can be implemented to improve a program or service that the department provides.    

Cultural Self-Awareness: Willing to examine own beliefs and acknowledge of own biases and how they have impacted or may impact the ability to serve students.   

Cultural Competence: Recognize the need to become knowledgeable about ways to communicate and support students of other backgrounds.  Change approach to reflect the new learning.    

Equity Mindedness: Learn to view department operations through an equity lens.  Be willing to call attention to processes that lead to inequity in serving students.  Understand the College's equity goals and how your role supports FRCC's ability to achieve those goals.    

Operational Planning: Have an understanding and knowledge of the college's various strategic plans and understand how your work supports each of them.  Understand the department's expectations to find proactive ways to support the goals of the department.    

Leading from the Middle: Lead from your position by not only closely examining your responsibilities for the department, but in bringing forward ideas to your supervisor the college should consider to be more student centered.    

Team Building: Participate in team-building exercises and strive to build positive and collaborative relationships with colleagues both within the department and in other departments within the college.  

Collaboration: Willingness to work with colleagues across departments to further student engagement.   

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Special or Developmental Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.    

• Experience working with individuals with disabilities.  

• Experience engaging students, clients and/or customers in a helping role.
