Storyteller & Content Editor

Share stories that inspire people to take action for animals.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Storyteller & Content Editor to help bring the ARL’s mission to life through writing and digital content. This role helps gather and share stories from across the organization that inspire adoptions, encourage donations, recruit volunteers, and connect the community to the work happening every day. This is a great opportunity for someone with writing, editing, communications, journalism, or digital content experience who enjoys finding meaningful stories and turning them into engaging content across multiple platforms.

• Typically Monday through Friday
• 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Occasional evening, weekend, or event support may be needed based on organizational needs.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal welfare organization, helping animals and the people who love them through sheltering, adoption, veterinary care, animal services, community programs, and pet support resources. Across multiple locations and programs in the Des Moines metro, the ARL works every day to provide compassionate care, practical support, and trusted resources for animals and families in our community.

• Gather stories from across the organization that highlight animals, adopters, volunteers, donors, staff, programs, and community impact.
• Write and edit content for newsletters, social media, emails, website updates, campaigns, and other communication channels.
• Interview staff and gather information from multiple departments to create accurate and engaging stories.
• Photograph animals, programs, events, and day-to-day moments that help show the ARL’s mission in action.
• Capture and support video content that can be used across digital platforms.
• Help ensure the ARL’s voice remains clear, consistent, authentic, and engaging.
• Manage multiple content projects while meeting deadlines and maintaining strong attention to detail.
• Collaborate with team members to support marketing, fundraising, adoption, volunteer, and program communication needs.

• High school diploma or GED reqired.
• At least two years of professional writing, editing, communications, journalism, marketing, nonprofit, or content creation experience preferred.
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
• Ability to adapt tone and content for different audiences and platforms.
• Comfort interviewing others, asking thoughtful questions, and gathering details from multiple sources.
• Photography, videography, or digital content creation experience preferred.
• Strong organization, creativity, curiosity, and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer proficiency and comfort using digital communication tools.

This position requires frequent sitting and computer work, along with occasional standing, walking, photography, videography, and event support activities. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

Work may occasionally occur outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve limited exposure to animals, animal dander, animal waste, moderate noise levels, contagious animal diseases, and the possibility of animal bites or scratches while following established safety procedures.
