Job Summary
The County of San Diego is currently recruiting for the position of

Licensed Mental Health Clinician, Sheriff's Detentions
Interviews will be conducted on an ongoing basis.

The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate's qualifications at time of appointment.
Future Salary Increase

** June 2026 - 4.3% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + .80% Market Adjustment)


** June 2027 - 3.8% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + .80% Market Adjustment)


The following additional premiums are available:

* 10% locked facilities premium and 10% premium for institutional work location
Qualified applicants will be invited to schedule an interview time and should expect to spend at least two hours for the interview and background process. Additional information will be provided prior to the interview. Interview times will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, so if you are contacted for an interview, please schedule as soon as possible. Successful candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam approximately 2-3 business weeks after the interview date.
This is a licensed professional class in the Sheriff's Office, Medical Services Division. Mental Health Clinicians provide a wide variety of professional mental health and case management services to incarcerated individuals with psychiatric disorders. In this position, you will conduct clinical assessments and develop treatment plans within a medical/psychiatric treatment program to patients presenting a varied array of psychiatric/psychological/substance use issues.

Ideal Candidate

  • Professional level experience as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team
  • Served as a program specialist or provided technical expertise through the application of appropriate individual or group psycho-therapeutic methods to adults during periods of crisis
  • Familiarity with and ability to function within the organizational structure of a law enforcement agency
  • Experience interfacing with a wide range of community organizations and knowledge of community resources
  • Professional demeanor with other agencies and collaborative partners with incarcerated individuals and families of incarcerated individuals
  • Knowledge of the California Welfare Act, Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act and Penal Codes 1026, 2970 and 1370
In addition, the department desires a candidate that displays leadership skills, can communicate effectively, can hold self and others accountable, is a problem solver and is innovative, demonstrates ethical behavior, leverages resources (coaches and develops), drives to excel, maximizes team effectiveness, and is supportive of change.

Hiring Process and Timeline

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 weeks following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Current licensure by the State of California as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage, Family and Child Counselor (MFCC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Clinical Psychologist
  2. AND Possession of a master's degree from an accredited graduate school in social work, psychology, counseling or a closely related field;
  3. AND At least two (2) years of full-time, post master's degree experience in a mental health program providing counseling and crisis intervention to adults under clinical supervision.

Conditions of Employment

Working Condition

Qualified applicants will be placed on a four (4) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
