Summary At the Indian Health Service, Dental Assistants do more than support oral care. Duties Assist the dentist with all phases of restorative and surgical procedures. Maintain aseptic technique and sterilize instruments. Expose and process dental radiographs following radiation‑safety protocols. Educate patients on oral hygiene and post‑treatment care. Support dental clinic operations, maintain supplies, and manage patient records. Requirements U.S. citizenship is required. Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Two valid forms of identification must be presented; at least one must be REAL ID compliant. Completion of a federal background investigation is required. A financial suitability review must be performed; applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility and satisfy legal obligations. Probationary period may apply upon hiring. Successful completion of E‑Verify employment verification is required. Qualifications General experience of at least six months in a customer‑service, record‑keeping, or clinic‑maintenance role, or Completion of a one‑year dental assistant program or a one‑year dental hygiene program that includes a radiation course, or Completion of a practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State or District of Columbia accrediting body, or Combination of experience and education. Specialized experience of at least six months in providing dental assistance, which may include chairside assistance, instrument setup, treatment recording, receptionist duties, and processing of digital oral X‑rays. Requirements can be satisfied by: Completion of a two‑year dental assistant program or a two‑year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation and including relevant radiation coursework, or Combination of experience and education wherein the education includes courses directly related to the position. Radiological certification as required by Public Law 97‑35 (e.g., certification as a radiographer or relevant experience). Education There are no specific education requirements for this position. However, education may be used to substitute for required experience. Official transcripts will be required from all selectees prior to receiving an official offer. Additional Information Federal employees earn annual leave based on years of service. This position may be covered by a bargaining unit and may include recruitment or relocation incentives.
