Responsibilities

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist I to work within the Wadsworth Center’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences. One of the Division’s goals is to assess human exposure to toxic chemicals (e.g., heavy metals, PFAS, pesticides, PAHs) that are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. The incumbent in this position will support the Organic Laboratory’s Emergency Response Program by performing the analysis of clinical samples using established protocols for organic chemicals using techniques based on liquid and gas chromatography-triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS).

Responsibilities will include performing targeted analysis for various chemical warfare agent metabolites in urine, serum and blood by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS and LC/MS/MS; contribute to the development of new protocols for measuring these and additional compounds in human matrixes; support of other emergency response testing with the laboratory. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining appropriate laboratory documentation, reviewing processed data, and contributing to the preparation of reports and standard operating procedures.

This position involves potential occupational exposure to human blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials. Employees are required to follow established biosafety and infection control procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical science or medical laboratory science or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical science or medical laboratory science or medical technology and one year of research experience. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.

This position will require the incumbent will meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. These requirements can be found here:

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Experience in clinical chemical warfare analysis using liquid chromatography coupled to triple-quad mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS or GC/MS/MS). Experience with robotic liquid handling and/or automated solid phase extraction. Experience working in a CLIA/NY State CLEP regulated clinical testing environment.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Travel up to 10% of the time will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

Telecommuting may be permitted on a limited or as-needed basis only.

The incumbent in this position will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Location Expectations
