About the Role Altera is seeking a Functional Safety Manager to lead and oversee functional safety activities across semiconductor and IP development projects in the Avionics, Automotive, and Industrial market segments. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring process and product compliance with ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and other relevant safety standards such as DO‑254/DO‑178, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to collate artifacts for safety packages and audit processes to demonstrate systematic capability throughout the safety lifecycle. Key Responsibilities Lead functional safety activities across various programs and projects, ensuring adherence to ISO 26262 and related standards. Develop, maintain, and implement functional safety plans tailored to each project’s needs. Collate safety evidence from stakeholders to build safety packages. Manage safety assessments (FMEDA, FTA, DFA, and Safety Case documentation) ensuring deliverables comply with safety standards. Train and mentor engineering teams on safety standards, processes, and best practices. Serve as liaison between internal teams, customers, and external safety certification bodies. Support continuous improvement of safety processes and tools organization‑wide. Schedule and conduct confirmation reviews as defined in the safety plan, ensuring milestone compliance. Manage third‑party audits and assessments, coordinating with external evaluators and stakeholders. Evaluate customer safety systems and recommend appropriate safety architecture. Act as gatekeeper for each phase of the safety lifecycle, ensuring all safety‑related work products meet quality and compliance requirements. Collaborate with internal safety, engineering, and product stakeholders, incorporating customer feedback into FPGA product safety roadmaps and safety data packages. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. 8+ years of experience in functional safety within the semiconductor industry, with a focus on ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 and safety‑critical applications. Hands‑on experience creating safety documents such as Safety Cases, Safety Management Plans, and Safety Manuals. Proven leadership in managing cross‑functional teams and safety‑critical projects. Experience with ISO 26262 certification preferred. Familiarity with automotive quality standards such as IATF16949, VDA6.3, and related processes is a plus. Familiarity with cybersecurity standards (ISO21434, IEC62443) is a plus. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with DO‑254 or MIL‑STD safety processes. Background in FPGA/ASIC/SoC architecture and verification. Familiarity with AS9100 QMS. Safety certifications (FSCP, TÜVFS Professional). Salary $149,100 – $215,900 USD (Bay Area, California).
