About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7P-7A Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Labor and Delivery License: Active RN License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced FHM, MOABCST Must-Have: Experience in a comparable facility with Level III NICU; completion of at least 1 assignment. Description: Immediate start needed. Interviews will be conducted through Simplifi. Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in Labor and Delivery. First-time travelers will not be accepted. The average number of deliveries per year is approximately 1800. Typically, there are 4 scheduled events daily, such as c-sections and versions. The unit consists of 2 triage rooms and 7 labor rooms. There are 25 postpartum/antepartum/GYN rooms allocated, with overflow Antepartum monitoring by Labor and Delivery RNs. RNs in Labor and Delivery must monitor patients across a large geographical area with a significant number of referrals. The unit is not currently designated as Baby Friendly; however, pool lactation staff are available. The care model involves rooming in for mother-baby pairs. Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby units are located next to each other with a locked, circular setup. Common patient diagnoses include PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, and drug addiction. Labor nurses are responsible for newborn care if the mother remains on the unit for continuous surveillance. Patient ratios vary and include 1:1-3 for cervical ripening and laboring, and typically 1:1 during active labor. Minimum staffing guidelines suggest 6 RNs for day and night shifts, with a possible reduction to 5 in the event of call-outs. Required skills for RNs include titration of Pitocin, management of fetal scalp electrodes and cervical exams, supporting CRNA during epidural placement, and managing insulin and magnesium drips. RNs must also perform neonatal resuscitation and assist with monitoring intrauterine pressure catheters. Additional responsibilities involve providing lactation support and following safe skin-to-skin protocols. OB technicians are responsible for the setup during vaginal deliveries and assisting in c-sections, as well as handling secretarial tasks as needed. Support on the unit includes a unit secretary for day shifts, a bed flow facilitator, and 24/7 coverage by a charge nurse, phlebotomist, respiratory therapist, and anesthesia staff. A certified midwife may be on call but there will always be backup for operative deliveries. Fetal monitoring technology is available at both the bedside and nurses' station. The electronic medical record system is Cerner, and medication dispensing is managed through Pyxis. RNs may float to Mother-Baby, specifically Antepartum and Postpartum areas. Weekend rotation is required as part of the schedule, with expectations to work at least half of the weekends. Holiday shifts will be rotated among staff. Scrub color will be navy, provided on site.
