The Mechanical Millwright Supervisor is a high-level field leader who combines technical expertise in both mechanical and machining repair with the strong ability to manage and has supervisory responsibilities across an entire project. Responsibilities may include interviewing, selection and hiring; training new and existing employees; planning, assigning and directing work Reporting directly to the Production Manager and the Project Team, this role bridges project strategy with day-to-day operational execution.
Candidates must possess proficiency in installing, maintaining, and repairing complex shipboard machinery (such as propulsion systems, pumps, valves, and gearboxes) utilizing manual machine shop tools, heavy rigging, precision alignment, and technical mathematics. In addition to these advanced technical capabilities, the Mechanical Millwright Supervisor is responsible for driving pre-shift planning, enforcing strict safety and environmental compliance, optimizing daily staffing needs, budgets, and managing extensive regulatory and quality assurance processes. The ideal candidate will maintain a presence on the ship, shop, or field to deliver clear technical direction, maximize workforce productivity, and ensure project targets are achieved safely, precisely, and within budget.
Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates a high level of mechanical ability, proficiency and expertise in multiple of the following areas.
- Installation & Assembly: Mount heavy machinery to foundations, positioning steel support beams using blueprints and layouts.
- Precision Alignment: Align machinery, pumps, and motors efficiently utilizing dial indicators, hoists, jacks, and layout tools.
- Machining & Fabrication: Operate engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and boring mills to fabricate parts to precise specifications.
- Component Fitting: Perform shrink-fitting of bushings, sleeves, rings, and gears using thermal expansion or liquid nitrogen techniques.
- Equipment Repair: Troubleshoot mechanical systems, replace defective parts, and adjust clearances on moving components.
- Rigging & Moving: Move heavy equipment using hoists, dollies, and trucks; overhead crane operations, load calculations, and inspections.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret complex blueprints, schematic drawings, engineering prints, and assembly layouts.
- Precision Measurement: Use and care for standard shop tools (micrometers, Verniers, calipers, height/pi gauges) to inspect parts.
- Hand & Power Tools: Utilize specialty tools effectively, including files, hacksaws, wrenches, porta-powers, and taps/dies.
- Trade Mathematics: Calculate metric/decimal conversions, percentages, and fractions required for high-precision measurements.
- Propulsion & Hull: Maintenance of propulsion systems, variable pitch propellors, and underwater hull machinery, including specialized bearings.
- Pumps & Fluid Systems: Service diverse pump types, mechanical seals, and shipboard fluid systems (fuel, lube oil, cooling).
- Valves & Actuators: Overhaul overboard and suction ship valves, executing disassembly, cleaning, lapping, bluing, and hydrostatic testing.
- Auxiliary Equipment: Repair steam systems, blowers, winches, hydraulic/pneumatic equipment, gearboxes, rudder systems, and condensers.
- Field Repairs: Execute field machining and repairs within a harsh marine environment.
- Compliance: Adhere strictly to all craft, shipyard safety, and environmental protection measures.
- Working Conditions: Perform duties safely at heights and within tight, confined spaces.
- Physical Fitness: Lift heavy objects and physically manipulate large components on a daily basis.
- Communication: Read, write, speak, and comprehend technical English clearly.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Assuring the enforcement of company safety policies regardless of reporting structure. Holds employees accountable for demonstrating acceptable safety practices
- As the Mechanical Millwright Supervisor, it is critical to the success of the project to spend the majority of their time where the work is being performed, whether it's onboard a vessel or in the field providing clear and precise direction to other supervisors and workers.
- Use computer access for JHA's, CFR's, correspondence and e-mail.
- Serves as primary point of contact when there are customer issues related to equipment quality, customer service, or safety related issues. Communicate customer issues with operations team and devise ways of improving customer experience, including resolving problems and complaints
- Leads a team to disassemble, diagnose, repair or replace, reassemble and test small to large assemblies for new builds and the ship repair industry.
- Managing all aspects of the assigned work on the project.
- Manage and coordinate shop items required for the assigned work.
- Plans and orders necessary shop material/tools/specialty materials and equipment to support work areas and work being performed.
- Determining daily project staffing requirements in accordance with budgets.
- Manage assigned item budgets and communicate with project team of any discrepancies.
- Assist with development and subsequent adherence to the advanced planning schedule.
- Establishing and achieving production goals.
- Responsible for accurate time keeping according to company policy and guidelines
- Reporting daily progress to the project team/Production manager.
- Assisting Project Team with change order estimating and tracking.
- Ensuring that all quality assurance documentation is completed and work is satisfactory prior to final inspections.
- Reading and understanding the specification for the project, understanding the interpretation and writing CFRs and other project documentation.
- Assisting Production Manager with employee/supervisor evaluations.
- Participating in all project meetings.
- Provides prompt and productive feedback, to employees and management on employee skills and work performance.
Physical Demands
- The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery.
- Ability to lift, carry 50Lbs. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.
Work Environment
- The work is performed inside ship, a shop or outside in the elements
- The work is performed around industrial equipment generating varying degrees of noise.
- Work may involve use of chemicals, coolants, greases, solvents, petroleum and vapors and fumes.
- Proper PPE will be provided as necessary.
This position may require occasional travel within the greater metropolitan area. Unless approved by the General Manager in advance, mileage accrued within this expected work areas will not be eligible for reimbursement but will be in alignment with Vigor's reimbursement policy.

Education and/or experience: Min. of five (5) years' experience in the industry, preference will be given to applicants who have 5 to 8 years of experience in the trade and in a supervisor capacity.
