Special Education Teacher - Itinerant (Parochial) Location: TBD (Kansas City, Kansas) The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and a diverse linguistic community. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the 6th highest‑rated high school in the nation and the top high school in Kansas according to US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas. The student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers. Job Details Job ID: 5745229 Application Deadline: Dec 31, 2026 11:59 PM (Central Standard Time) Posted: May 28, 2026 5:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Position Type: Full‑Time Job Duration: 186 Days Job Description Title: Special Education Teacher Job Goal: To provide students with the knowledge, information, and skills that empower them to become successful members of the community after high school. Essential Functions Advocate for the rights of students with special needs. Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and service providers. Plan instructional programs for the classroom, including individual plans as outlined on students’ Individual Education Programs. Serve as a liaison between the school and the community. Hold I.E.P./annual review meetings, ensuring parents’ and students’ input and notifying all service providers per local guidelines. Participate as an active member on the I.E.P. team for all students, whether or not on the caseload. Develop and maintain all I.E.P.s in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines. Maintain close communication with mainstream teachers and other service providers, keeping them fully informed of student progress. Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the building administrator or special education administrator. Perform additional duties that provide a positive role model for students in the classroom and outside of it. Evaluate student performance by performing diagnostic testing necessary for annual reviews, eligibility staffing, and quarterly I.E.P. updates. Monitor student progress in mainstreamed classes. Assist in establishing class schedules. Supervise, evaluate, and help train paraprofessionals as assigned. Request equipment and supplies as necessary to meet objectives outlined on individual students’ I.E.P.s. Demonstrate curriculum knowledge and effective teaching strategies. Implement behavioral intervention plans as necessary. Perform other duties deemed necessary by federal, state, and local guidelines and students’ Individual Educational Programs. Work a full duty day in the location(s) assigned by the supervisor. Physically and emotionally capable of performing required work and moving about as needed in the fast‑paced, highly intensive school environment. Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Meet the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education. Hold or be eligible for Kansas certification appropriate for the position. Be tolerant and understanding of students with special needs. Show initiative, creativity, self‑motivation, and good judgment. Demonstrate good judgment, adaptability, and flexibility. Respect confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal skills, professional judgment, oral and written communication. Be efficient and organized in “paper management.” High School Certification. Communication Maintain communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets the educational needs of students. Provide health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner to enhance the health and wellness of the school community. Complete accident/incident reports for students and staff. Compile data for statistical purposes. Maintain confidentiality regarding educational records. Organization Maintain a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation. Maintain the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Perform other related work as required. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Language Skills Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public. Physical Demands The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, and talk or hear. Occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and pushing items of 50 pounds such as push on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture. Occasionally may visit a child’s home. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and depth perception. Work Environment The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and aligns with standard acceptable levels for this environment. The employee is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well‑being. Other Skills and Abilities Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
