Levine Lab – Pain Research Pharmacologist (Assistant Professional Researcher) Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, San Francisco. Location: San Francisco, CA. Position Overview This position involves leading preclinical pain research studies, designing and conducting experiments in rodent pain models, analyzing data, publishing results, and mentoring junior staff. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement disease models for diverse pain syndromes (inflammatory, neuropathic, nociplastic). Design and perform pain behavior experiments in rats (e.g., Randall‑Selitto, von Frey, Hargreaves, facial grimace). Administer drugs via intradermal, intrathecal, intraplantar, subcutaneous, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes. Analyze large datasets from behavioral pharmacology experiments using software such as SPSS, R, GraphPad Prism. Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams (pharmacologists, molecular biologists, electrophysiologists, computational biologists). Prepare research reports, manuscripts, and compliance documentation (IACUC, biohazard, BUA). Mentor junior researchers and students in experimental techniques, data analysis, and scientific writing. Required Qualifications Doctorate in Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field, plus at least 3 years of relevant experience. Expertise in pain behavioral pharmacology focused on peripheral mechanisms in preclinical models. Strong hands‑on experience with rat experimentation and pain‑behavior protocols. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and compliance. Preferred Qualifications Advanced expertise in pain behavioral pharmacology techniques. Understanding of neuronal signaling pathways, especially in nociceptors. Experience with data analysis tools such as GraphPad Prism. Publication record in pain mechanisms, particularly nociceptor function. Ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot complex in vivo experiments. Project management experience and proactive issue identification. Ability to supervise and train junior staff. Independent and team‑oriented work style. Strong organizational skills and capacity to meet deadlines. Willingness to learn new methods and adapt to changing priorities. Salary Salary range: $93,400–$122,100 (see Table 13B for details).
