Job Description

The GIS Technician converts as-built data into geographic information systems, creates high-quality maps and reports for internal and external stakeholders, and supports geospatial tools and processes. This role focuses on maintaining accuracy, meeting turnaround time targets, and collaborating with GIS professionals to enhance tools and workflows while providing training and basic system support on geospatial issues.

Responsibilities

• Convert as-built data into GIS formats while consistently meeting established quality and turnaround time metrics.

• Provide as-built training and quality assurance oversight for GIS mapping contractors to ensure data integrity and mapping standards.

• Create maps, drawings, and reports for internal and external customers, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and timely delivery.

• Serve as a subject matter expert on geospatial issues and provide training and basic system support to team members and stakeholders.

• Manage routine GIS tasks, including data management, data maintenance, and map creation, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

• Collaborate closely with GIS analysts on complex projects, contributing technical expertise and supporting project delivery.

• Provide input and feedback on GIS tool enhancements to improve functionality, usability, and workflow efficiency.

• Perform GIS analysis and mapping using ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, ArcPro, and related mapping software.

• Support digitization and map-building activities, including converting and maintaining geospatial data for gas utility operations.

• Ensure all geospatial data and mapping outputs comply with internal standards and industry best practices.

Essential Skills

• 2-5 years of experience working with GIS, including as-built updating and creating maps within ArcMap, ArcGIS, or ArcPro.

• Proficiency with ArcGIS and related mapping software, including ArcGIS Online and Esri tools.

• Hands-on experience with GIS mapping, digitization, and geospatial data management.

• Ability to create and maintain maps, drawings, and reports with a strong focus on accuracy and turnaround time.

• Knowledge of gas utilities, including distribution or transmission operations, and how they relate to geospatial data.

• Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Planning or Environmental Science, GIS minor or certificate, or a closely related field.

• Strong understanding of geography, geospatial concepts, and GIS analysis.

• Ability to provide training and quality assurance for GIS mapping contractors.

• Experience collaborating with GIS analysts and technical teams on complex geospatial projects.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Diploma or certificate in GIS or a related discipline is preferred.

• Experience working with engineering-related GIS datasets and mapping for utility infrastructure.

• Familiarity with gas utility as-built documentation and processes.

• Comfort working with map-building software and geospatial data tools in a professional setting.

• Strong communication skills for delivering training, sharing subject matter expertise, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

• Ability to provide input on GIS tool enhancements and process improvements.

• Detail-oriented approach with a commitment to data quality and consistency.

Work Environment

This role is based in a modern office environment with a hybrid work schedule consisting of four days in the office and one remote work-from-home day per week, typically on Fridays. During the initial training period, there may be an expectation to work in the office five days per week before transitioning to the hybrid schedule. The position is located in a well-appointed building in a prime area near major roadways, restaurants, and entertainment options. The GIS team sits together on the sixth floor, and the GIS Technician will have an individual cubicle within a tight-knit, collaborative team that regularly engages in team activities such as lunches and social outings. The work involves using GIS software, mapping tools, and standard office equipment in a professional, business-casual environment focused on accuracy, efficiency, and teamwork.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Naperville, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr.
