Full-Time/Part-Time - Full-Time
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is responsible for instructing students and contributing to the selection and organization of curriculum, veterinary protocols, equipment, and supplies. The DVM also provides guidance to students and partner shelter facilities on general care practices, medical conditions, treatments, and appropriate medication protocols. Instruction further includes preparing and managing medical records as part of the animal care process.
Success in this role requires the ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and in a motivating manner; use questioning strategies that promote critical thinking and encourage students to pursue their own answers; maintain an organized and disciplined learning environment; and uphold strict confidentiality in all matters involving student information and records. The role also requires strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate and reliable tracking systems that support student progress and program needs.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Student Instruction & Learning Environment
- Develop lesson plans that include lecture and/or lab delivery methods, assignments/activities, homework, and evaluation tools for assigned classes as designated by the Valley College Academics team.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver the duties of a veterinarian in laboratory settings within the Valley College curriculum.
- Instruct and guide students in the classroom and/or lab learning environment, as designated by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA/CVTEA) recommended curriculum and Essential and Recommended Skills List.
- Demonstrate procedures/processes and operate appropriate equipment as designated by the curriculum.
- Grade and evaluate students' work in a timely manner and provide constructive feedback.
- Assist and tutor students with areas of the curriculum with which they are having difficulty.
- Maintain a cooperative and professional learning environment.
- Provide telephone and/or email follow-up with students as requested within 24 hours of initial contact follow Valley College communication protocol.
- Participate and/or coordinate program-related activities on or off campus.
- Animal Care & Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform initial exams and ongoing animal care on all incoming animals upon intake at the campus.
- Demonstrate and supervise examinations on a variety of animals to diagnose health needs and support long-term well-being, including treatments, wound care, surgery, diagnostic testing, vaccinations, and use of applicable medical equipment.
- Coordinate and assist with animal acquisition and record keeping.
- Review and approve all release records and support documentation on each animal prior to release.
- Ensure all records for the animals are complete and medications are with those responsible for the animals upon release.
- Communicate all medical concerns with shelter facility representatives.
- Documentation, Reporting & Academic Records
- Keep accurate and up-to-date progress reports on students' work.
- Prepare periodic reports/updates on students, classroom rosters, and documentation demonstrating program changes, as required.
- Course Development
- Conduct ongoing evaluation of course material.
- Participate in the selection of books and materials.
- Participate in the development of current tests, assignments, and course syllabi.
- Participate, coordinate, and assist with creating and implementing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policies and protocols.
- Ensure department compliance with AVMA (CVTEA), IACUC, USDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, Radiology, and OSHA requirements.
- Assist with creating and implementing programmatic accreditation policies and procedures, including the Essential and Recommended Skills List.
- Professional Development
- Develop a professional development and professional growth plan, including continuing education that meets the requirements of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, Ohio Professional Development for Faculty, and ACCSC accreditation.
- Provide support documentation that the professional development and continuing education plan has been executed.
- Attend departmental meetings and participate in professional development and compliance training activities
- Attend and/or conduct Valley College Veterinary Program PAC (Program Advisory Committee). meetings and IACUC meetings, as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but collaborates with the academics' team to support student success.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position operates within a professional higher education environment, which may include office, classroom, laboratory, clinical, remote, and other work settings as required by the position. The role involves regular interaction and engagement with members of the College community. Employees routinely use computers, real-time communication systems, and other tools, technology, and equipment necessary to perform the responsibilities of the position.

- Maintain sufficient visual acuity to read, review, and prepare documents.
- Perform physical tasks associated with the responsibilities of the position, which may include moving, positioning, lifting and carrying, reaching, bending, stooping, or handling materials and equipment.

Travel
It may require occasional travel to different campus site, off-site work-related locations such as field trips or externship sites, professional development events, or campus events.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is an exempt, full-time salary position. It is an onsite position. Workdays and hours may vary based on the academic term and student needs. Standard business hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Requirements: Education, Licensing, Prior Work Experience & Other
- Education: Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA-accredited College of Veterinary Medicine (All U.S. veterinary schools are AVMA-COE accredited; foreign graduates must meet equivalency.)
- Licensure: Must hold an active, current, unrestricted veterinary license in the program's state OR be eligible for licensure and complete it quickly after hire. The license must remain active and unencumbered throughout the employment.
- Prior Work Experience: Required: Four years of practical work experience as a DVM, RVT or direct animal care that does not include teaching experience is required. (and) Preferred: One or more years of teaching experience.
- DEA registration, radiology training, and USDA accreditation may be required based on program operations.
